Could someone tell me what the current state of affairs is with using 4gb sd cards in Axim x30's. All I seem to find are Transcend cards with terrible user reviews. When I do see other brands, and that's not often, they are much more expensive than 4gb hc sd's. Thanks for any info.
The Transcend 4gb sd card will work in your x30. This was copied directly from a review posted on newegg:
Quote:
One of the very few 4GB SD cards that are not SDHC. The cheapest of the 3 4GB SD cards Transcend makes that are listed on Newegg. The biggest capacity card you will be able to get without getting an SDHC card. (4GB is the max size limit for regular SD with 2GB the max standard size.)
Works with my Dell Axim X30, PS3, and a Sandisk reader that can also handle SDHC cards.
Thanks for the input but I've already seen that page and that card has some of the highest percentage of bad reviews I've seen on Newegg. 36 really bad vs 59 good. Newegg is fine but because of the cost of shipping, even if they refund the price of the card, you might as well just throw it away. If you buy 2 or 3(with seperate shipping costs for each one),assuming some will either be doa or die within some weeks you might as well have paid more for a more reputable brand. I just don't come across any reasonably priced non hc sd cards.

You might know this already, but that's because 2GB is the highest capacity the SD standard was officially rated up to. 4GB and higher all are SDHC...which the Axim x30 can't read. If 4GB in one card is really that important to you (and something that 2 x 2GB can't solve), then you probably will have to look to a different device for those larger storage needs.

I bought the Scandisk 4GB SD card to replace my 4GB A-Data card. I've used the A-Data card for about 3 years and it is falling apart.
When I received the Scandisk card, it was not formatted, so I had to format it before I could start using it. When I attempted to format it in my computer, which has an SD card slot, the formatting operation always errored out. After several tries, I formatted the SD card in my Pocket PC via SKTOOLS formatting option.
When I use my computer's SD slot, the computer always gives me a message to format the card (even though it is already formatted). I checked around the internet and this problem seems to be caused by an old driver, but the manufacturer of my computer has not posted a new driver to their website, so I cannot use this SD card in the SD slot of my computer. Instead I am using a USB card reader when I want to transfer files to and from the computer and have no problems doing so.
The card is working well for me and I have no real complaints. Even if the card eventually stops working, at its current price, the card will still be a good deal. As a comparative example, I can purchase a pair of panty hose for more than the price of that card, and sometimes only get one day's use out of those things...now that's a waste of money!

With reviews, people who have inadequately done research still post a bad product review when its their fault. I hate it when this happens. Because this is a non-hc card, people may be dissatisfied that it is older technology. And things like Julie mentioned, since 4gb non-hc cards are so rare, other people may be running into driver issues.
But, if you want to be safer, you can always go with 2gb cards which are more mainstream.

I have 2gb cards but need more space since I use my Axim for listening to music, podcasts and navigation. I bought a 4gb non hc sd card 18 months ago called "CN Memory SD Micro 4GB Gold". It started to physically fall apart. Unfortunately part of it jammed the sd card slot of my camera before I realized what was happening and quit using it. It ended up costing me a bundle to fix the camera. The company that distributes the card sent a form letter back to me saying they would get in touch and never did. So I'm leery about off brands especially if a significant number of people have had problems with them.
Thanks for the technical info on how tricky it can be formatting these kind of sd cards. I have a recent Dell laptop and it's card reader started giving error messages but my cheap little usb card reader reads the cards just fine. I'm just trying to continue using the Axim but would enjoy having more songs, podcasts already on it without fooling with extra cards. It's easier keeping track of the podcasts if they are all on one card too.
By the way Julie you mention Scandisk 4gb , I guess thats a Sandisk? And is it non hc?
Sorry, it's a Transcend SD card. It's the exact SD card from NewEgg that Spunker provided a link to in reply #2.

Reason: fixed typo
I've been using the 4GB OCZ card in my devices (X50v, Canon S80 camera, laptops, etc.) for a couple of years now without any difficulties (touch wood).
Gigi,
Do they still have this one available? I could only find HC ones online. Is this faster than the Transcend one?
Thanks.
Esther.
I just checked the OCZ site, and it looks like they no longer make these. I purchased mine a couple of years ago in Canada. As for speed, I can't compare to the Transcend as I've never owned that one, but I can say that transfers were reasonable speeds, but not too speedy.
Thanks for this thread guys. I also have music and the occasional video I want to store alongside programs. I will be switching to the x51v soon but in the meantime I have ordered an Transcend non-hc 4 gb card.
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.
