Save your money, just by paper protectors!
I bought some Fellows Screen protectors for some other model of PDA, and god, the application process is very difficult, and they don't fit that well without cutting.

I went to Staples (Business Depot), bought medium weight paper protectors (the ones you slide the sheet into), cut it a bit larger than the screen, and it works perfectly. If you get it right, it won't move at all, once under the screen edge. No adhesion to worry about. No bubbles to worry about, easy to remove, and they don't scratch very much. Best thing is, I got 100 sheets for 5 bucks canadian. They are two sided, thus, the equivelent of 200 sheets, and from each sheet, you can likely make 10+ covers.

I don't think I will bother with the adhesive type like the fellows again.

Why not just spend a little extra money and have a screen protector that you can just wash off like the BoxWave or Brando? I'd much rather have something designed to protect my expensive screen and provide other uses such as glare reduction and the like.

I have the 12 pack that dell sells, once you remove the film (there is no sticky side, it's for shipping protection) they are easy to install and rewashable. they seem to be holding up very well so far and I've noticed no decrease in stylus accuracy.

I recall someone had once posted templates (might have been on another forum) to use those clear things as a screen protector instead. If I can dig it up it was a very nice template to print on and cutout

it just seems to me like the paper protectors wouldn't provide the same protection... though i could be wrong!

As for the templates, the guy who I believe created them and still has them on his website is theJOKER.

I was able to go to 3M's website and get a sample pack of transparency sheets for free. So, all my protectors cost me was Time.

Here is the site for the protector templates.

I've used the template noted below with both 3M and Staples transparencies since day one with excellent results.

The fit is professional and I can go for weeks at a time without changing depending on how much X5 usage I have and my tolerance for clouding from continued use.

Obviously, the cost is pennies per protector

I have noticed one flaw, that may be only because of the brand I have used.
But I believe there is some interaction with the plastic, and the screen, creating lines going horizontally. It is like some polarization effect. I will have to investigate. If this is the case, for 5 bucks, it was worth the experimentation.

EDIT: Yes, there definitely is some form of patterned polarization going on, causing one or two lines visible depending on the way I cut the protector. That sucks.

Also, I find the templates for the X5 to be too big, likely because of its generally bigger size, and more room under the screen, on the sizes..

When someone above said "take the film off the Dell Screen protector", I hope he is referring to the white piece of cardboard that you peel off the screen protector from. After you peel it off, you are left with a white piece of cardboard with DELL on the top and www.dell.com on the bottom.

I hope I never missed a step.

Can I wash these screen protectors somehow? Mine looks all scratched up.

Well, I just bought those plastic covers for binding documents, and it is working well.

I see some scratches, generally, but I have no lines like the sheet protectors. THere is an interesting texture when writing, like a grainyness, but it seems to work better than the sheet protectors, and is a bit thicker = better protection.

WARNING: If you cut it to large, it will seem like it gets stuck, requiring force to remove it!

Hi Deam,

Have you encounterd any issues with numbed screen-sensitivity because of the added thickness of the plastic you're using? Do you find that the protective plastic shifts around in any way?

Cheers

I just use 3M multipurpose transparency sheets for my screen protectors. 5 sheets for 5 bucks, the paper protecters sound like a great idea, i will try those soon too.
