Why is Sandisk SD bad?
All I really hear around here is how bad Sandisk SD cards are. I'm wondering, WHY are they so bad. Give me some specific reasons, as I know a place that is having a good black friday sale on them, and I'm considering them.

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=4031 is a thread regarding the 256mb sandisk cards that are not fully compatible to Axim X5 (not sure about X3s)
there is alot of other information about them in other forums as well as in the special links section of this forum. It isn't a great deal if it will not work with your Axim.

I have a 256 and 128 sandisk and they work ok. Is it an x5 issue?

the 256 is an issue with the X5, as I stated above I don't know about the X3 but there is a huge thread (link above) regarding the cards.

I have an X3i and had a SanDisk problem, but I don't know if it is related to the problems people with the X5 had. It was made in China, I had another made in Japan with no problems. I bought a lexar 256mb and have no problems it to was made in Japan. Safest bet buy one made in Japan.

OK, that sucks. Becuase on Black Friday Best Buy will have a Sandisk 256MB SD Card for $50 after rebates.

Your best bet is to buy one (if it's a really good deal) and see if it works okay. There are many people who have never had a problem out of them, but then there are also many people who have had problems with them. There will be some customers of any brand SD card who have problems......it's just that Sandisk SD cards seem to have many more customers who have problems. But again, I'll state that lots of people use Sandisk cards just fine.

Main thing is to be sure wherever you buy it from has a decent return policy (even once it is opened). Also, with rebates (that require UPC barcodes from the box).....wait to mail the rebate off until you've tested the card. It is against many stores' return policies to accept returns that don't have a UPC barcode still on the box.

Finally, regarding this "great deal" on Friday. It's really not that great.....well, it's alright for a retail store. But I bought a 256MB Lexar SD for $49.99 after rebates almost a year ago from eCost.com. And you can usually find for around $50 after rebate on many brands online nowadays. But if you're the type that is a stickler for buying stuff only from retail stores, then the Best Buy deal is a good one.

Comp USA is only $49.99 out of the store, no rebates, so good deal there.

I read somewhere that SanDisk made in China have many problems with pdas, not only with axim...
Sd made in Japan are good.
For example, many people had troubles with SD 256mb sold in bundle with ipaq 1940 + TomTom Navigator GPS...

However, I bought a Panasonic 256mb and it works perfectly...

stay away from mfr rebates - oft times they send a post card stating you have forgotten something. or make copies of everything and have the copy of the receipt notarized if you know a notary.

good points, but some of you are still missing the basics.

1. every denomination of China OR Taiwan SD above 32MB has had issues. Kingston is an exception, see link below. SD memory is made in three countries at this time: Japan, Taiwan, China.
2. the problems with (some) China/Taiwan SD cards: need to format (and lose data); inability to use whole card; other formatting problems; and/or total failure of card.
3. Complaints about Japan SD are essentially non-existent. I can think of only three posts I have seen in the last 8-10 months complaining about Japan SD, and they were all unconfirmed. There have been issues with Japan SD not being recognized in X3 SD slots, but those all turned out to be bad SD slots which did not recognize anything else, either.
4. Sandisk does not make any SD cards in Japan. Some brands make SD only in Japan. Some brands make SD in all three countries.

pretty much everything else I know about SD--including more info about brands and performance--is in my third post in this thread:

Two things...first topic related. I have a Chinese 256 SD card that works great. Second, I have NEVER had any problems with mfgr rebates from Best Buy.
