I have a X3i on trial, and had it using my Nokia 6310i for Infrared connection to Intnernet (using GPRS) and basic dialup ino the office remote access router with no problems at all.
My experience is only with Nokia 6210 & 6310i mobile phones.
On the X3 I just selected "Infrared" and a connection speed of 57600 and hardware flow control - really basic setup.
You do have to line the infrared ports up of course, and have them approx 30cm apart. Works fine if you are on a desk and are not going to move the phone or PDA around too much.
However, I would MUCH prefer to use Bluetooth, as this is a short-range wireless connection - which means the phone can be in a bag/briefcase - and still be accessed by your PDA.
My only issue with Bluetooth is that I can not find out:
(1) Which bluetooth card can be used with the X3i, I was told (by Dell!) to use the D-Link CF card, but the X3i does not have a CF slot!
(2) If there is any truth to the rumour of a new X3i (?) with built-in Bluetooth being released in Jan 2004. Almost all the new PDA's have Bluetooth support as standard. I'm waiting for info back frmo Dell on this - will post this news as & when I get it!
rgds,
Antony.
PS. Very happy to provide precise details on IR setup instructions if required. But it probably take me longer to enter those details in here than it would be for you to work it out!
PSS. If you watch your phones display, you can see if it is dialling of course, and on the NIkia a "D" symbol comes up when it is on a data call.
