New to Axim and have modem question
I am looking at purchasing an Axim and want the capability of dialing up to retrieve my email. However I have not found an accessory for the Axim to do this. I have read about infrared and Bluetooth but I'm not sure how this works. My cell has infrared - do you dial though the cell? And isn't bluetooth just another form of infrared.

Also was wondering where the good sites are to download games for this?

Thanks for any help.

Which Axim, the X3 or X5? With the X5, you can get a CF modem to do it with. There are many threads on how to do this, and where to get them. Using an IR cell phone to dial through is a different story. Search for the phone you have, and see if you can do it. It really depends on your cell provider.

Sorry, I never actually check which forum posts come from. I just hit the new posts button, and look at the title. My mistake. For the X3, getting dialup email will be a little more difficult. Using a link between IR is pretty hard to set up, and not very reliable. Which cell provider do you have? There are cables you can buy that will connect your phone and your Axim so you can get online.

I have a X3i on trial, and had it using my Nokia 6310i for Infrared connection to Intnernet (using GPRS) and basic dialup ino the office remote access router with no problems at all.

My experience is only with Nokia 6210 & 6310i mobile phones.

On the X3 I just selected "Infrared" and a connection speed of 57600 and hardware flow control - really basic setup.

You do have to line the infrared ports up of course, and have them approx 30cm apart. Works fine if you are on a desk and are not going to move the phone or PDA around too much.

However, I would MUCH prefer to use Bluetooth, as this is a short-range wireless connection - which means the phone can be in a bag/briefcase - and still be accessed by your PDA.

My only issue with Bluetooth is that I can not find out:
(1) Which bluetooth card can be used with the X3i, I was told (by Dell!) to use the D-Link CF card, but the X3i does not have a CF slot!
(2) If there is any truth to the rumour of a new X3i (?) with built-in Bluetooth being released in Jan 2004. Almost all the new PDA's have Bluetooth support as standard. I'm waiting for info back frmo Dell on this - will post this news as & when I get it!

rgds,

Antony.

PS. Very happy to provide precise details on IR setup instructions if required. But it probably take me longer to enter those details in here than it would be for you to work it out!

PSS. If you watch your phones display, you can see if it is dialling of course, and on the NIkia a "D" symbol comes up when it is on a data call.
