Do I need a memory card reader/writer?

Does it hurt your axim or the card to write to the card while it is in the axim? I know there are memory card readers and all but what is the point? Is it kinda like vhs tape rewinders, supposed to reduce wear on the tape and machine?

For transferring huge amounts of data, USB is painful.

I use wifi. Some use BT or card readers.

The Axim is designed to read/write from the storage cards. Won't hurt them.

Why is USB painful? Isn't USB 2.0 faster than wireless anyway? Is the cradle just a 1.1 usb?

The USB cradle does not transfer at USB 2.0 speeds. In fact, the cradle transfers below 1.1 speeds. So Howard's description is quite accurate.... PAINFUL

It's also because PIE is slow to render pages.

And believe me, things have improved!! :)

Except memory cards don't run at anywhere near USB 2 speeds, in fact not much faster than USB1.1.

Huh? SD Memory will do up to 10MB/s according to spec.

USB 1.1 full speed 12Mb/s (1.5MB/s) or low speed 1.5Mb/s (0.1875MB/s). SD memory speeds are in theory many times faster than USB 1.1

USB 2 is up to 480Mb/s - 60MB/s. So USB 2 is a fair amount faster but storage cards are much faster than USB 1.1

Following a newsgroup discussion recently I tried copying a large file to an SD card. Using USB2 was about 20% faster than using USB1.

my simpletech SD card is almost 300% faster than it would be in a USB1.1 reader.

4MB/sec in USB2 versus 1.41MB/sec max in USB1.1.

sounds like USB2 is worth it to me. besides, SD cards are gradually getting faster. how old is yours anyway?

at any rate, any old USB card reader is so much faster than activesuck it's not funny.

Maybe my card is relatively slow, but your 4MB/second is a long way short of the claimed 60MB/second by Simpletech via your sig link.

The card was not directly in the USB slot though. Did you use a USB card reader each time? Was it a slow SD card? Did you do it through AS?

I don't know the speed of my card. I was using a USB2 card reader.
