I know it's not a USB device, but some USB devices have what is called a firmware "loader" on board the device.
In some devices, the loader actually loads the current firmware into the device memory from eeprom evertime the device is powered on. In others, it simply is used to manage the firmware on a device.
If a similar mechanism is implemented on the clip-on, the BT would be used to transfer the new firmware which the loader would then update the firmware on the device.
this gets around of the problem of "how can the firmware update itself" type issues.
My USB BT dongle works this way.
