An idea for PDA accessory manufacturers

After looking at the tapwave zodiac I thought that it would be cool if someone would make an external spring mounted game controller which would interact with any PDA with IRDA.

Above are images that I have mocked up using photoshop to further explain this idea (The black horizontal lines would be replaced with those spring type things used in sun-glasses that clip onto prescription glasses)

Why IRDA and not have it plug into the sync port?

Because that would limit it's application to 1 group of PDA's

Why not bluetooth?

Not every PDA is equipped with bluetooth as standard, plus it would create havoc should there be another PDA using the device nearby.

What if the IRDA is in a different place on every PDA?

The IR LED would be made to slide up within the case so that the LED can be in the correct place for each PDA.

What about the antenna for wifi / bluetooth?

Good point, I would suppose that spacers would have to be provided to ensure that each side of the unit would remain parallel to each other. This is the only area where a manufacturer would have to make arrangements for every brand of PDA.

Will it scratch my PDA?

Not if the parts which come into contact with the pda were to be padded.

Please comment on this idea, perhaps a busy thread would persuade someone to make it a reality.

Looks like a good idea to me. Would be much easier to game on PDA's. Especially on the Axim since my two inner buttons feel cheap and not springy.

Fairly old and common idea. Never will happen unless you make it.

One problem is that the IR port isn't always on the top of the PDA, sometimes it's on the side, or in one case, on the bottom!

The only good news about game pads on PPC, is that a someone is currently working on an adapter for PSX pads to IR, and looks like they have a very good chance of following through; http://www.pocketmatrix.com/forums/v...6364&start=135
