Can I use a usb cable to charge my Axim at work if I don't have Activesync installed? Just to power it? Or do I need to use the ac adapter?

You can't use the included usb cable to charge. Boxwave makes a cable that will charge via usb port.

That's odd since I use the included USB cable to charge every day on my home PC.

Yes, you don't need anything installed. I charge my Smartphone at work with USB Retracable BoxWare cable. "New hardware detected" window pops up and I just move it off the screen. It would come up again if I cancelled.

The axim should l charge when connected to the usb cable if the unit is turned off.
