These work relatively well, but you're still going to get fm quality.

I've tried a couple of those things. In a city like Los Angeles, where every available channel has been assigned and is in use, they don't work very well. I tried one with a completely adjustable frequency range, and had to change frequencies every few miles.
That was the case on long road trips as well. Now I just wear earphones on the long trips (Koss "The Plug") and risk the ticket (in the car and on the bike). In the city, I just play homemade CD mixes in the stock CD player.
If I really wanted to use it badly in town, I'd get one of those FM modulators like the Dension 3 or Kenwood KCA-20FM that go in-line with the antenna, and cut off the regular antenna when an input is sensed. These are pretty common at places that sell satellite radios like XM.
