I was looking to get Total Remote (http://www.griffintechnology.com/gri...e/totalremote/) for my X30 to control my tv, dvd, hi-fi etc but wanted to make sure it would be compatible first as I've read about a couple of problems with range on this site. I emailed Griffin Technology to get a definitive answer and to find out if their Remote module (irda extender that plugs into the audio jack) was compatible, and here is the reply...

The software is designed to work with the built in iRDA on the Dell X3. The actual transmitter will not work with the built in audio. Dell has designed their iRDA to be exceptional strong to make use of our software and and give you a range of around 20' to 30'. This is comparable to the range that our transmitter operates. Most iRDA transmitters only work at 5' to 8' at most so Dell is X3 is optimized to use our software with it's built in hardware transmitter. You will not use our device with the X5. Only the software.
This only applicable to the X5 unit. All other compatible handhelds will still need out actual TR device. Call us at 615-399-7000 if you have any questions.
Is it just me, or is that not very clear? I was under the impression that the Axims quite short ranges, rather than being "exceptional strong"!
Has anyone got any recommendations of remote control software?
I just downloaded the Total Remote from Griffin Technology. It works great on my Axim X30 from 25 feet using the infrared. It is easier to program than any other remote I have tried. It costs a little more, but is worth it.
here's a stupid question... why would you want to use your $300 axim to accompish a $10 task.. mainly channel surfing. Am I missing something here? I mean it would seem to be a clumsy way to change channels
What happenned to me is that the experience varies depending on the system you want to control. For example my X30 sucks at changing the channels on my AIWA FTV2500, no more than 8 feet away but I can pump up the volume on my friend's LG sound system farther than 25 feet from it! I think it has something to do with the system sending Ir signals back to the AXIM not being detected by the PocketPC Ir sensor, not what everyone seems to worry about, the AXIM not pumping enough Ir to reach the system...
I think that I mainly want to do it for the sake of it, and to see if its a worth while thing to do! And I'm a bit of a gadget nut
Miguel, I'm not 100% sure, but I think remote controls are one-way aren't they? I don't think most remotes have a receiver, just a transmitter. I would think its more likely to do with the difference in frequency/wavelength that is used by irda (computers) and appliance remotes. You might find the LG uses a more similar frequency than the Aiwa (now I'm just guessing).
Follow the link from an earlier post to the PDAWin site. Essentially CCF files are used to control the look (skin) of the remote control application and define what the buttons map to etc.

Don't forget to give credit where credit is due. CCF files are a product of Philips and are used with their Pronto remote controls, some Marantz remotes, some Yamaha remotes, anything that was OEMed from Philips.

Because it's cheaper than spending $300 on a remote control that's only a remote control.
