Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL
I just purchased these earbud headphones from an eBay source for about $35 plus shipping.

Anyone ever use these things? Were you as amazed as I was? I have to say, these headphones are worth every penny! I've never heard my music so clear before.

I was apprehensive at first spending so much on them, especially when reviewing their specs. A 9mm NIB serves as the driver. Most people's ear canal is smaller than this, so I thought, there's no chance of broad band listening--all treble, no bass. When I first began listening, I was shocked to find that the bass on these little tiny miracles was better than my home woofer!

Granted, I have a six year old woofer sitting under my desk, but you get the idea. The design is completely enclosed, which does not allow frequencies to leave the bud before you hear them. The high range is smooth, the delicate mid range is superb, and as mentioned before, the bass is brilliant. The enclosure also serves to seal out outside sound sources. They're not noise cancelling, just noise diminishing. This allows weenie music listeners like me to keep my overall volume quite low, while still enjoying every part of my music with no outside interference.

Here I am, 2:30 in the morning, listening to Led Zepplin's "Stairway To Heaven," and catching more subtleties in the music than I've ever heard before. Then the song switches to Bloodhound Gang's "You Must Die." Yes, my playlist is quite diverse. Anyway, I'm still amazed at the driving, clear, and even puncy bass that this little package delivers. Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" plays next and just seals the deal by combining everything mentioned above.

If anyone is thinking of buying these but is apprehensive, or even if you are just looking for a new headphone set, let me be the one to tell you to get these! As I said before, they're worth every penny!

try this, imo it makes a pretty significant difference (I only did the taped holes mod)

http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...d&pagenumber=2

it is pretty good for ~$35, a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from the cheap ones shipped with various players and other low cost headphones and it makes a HUGE difference in the quality of the music.

I have the Sony Fontopias too, and I love them. In addition to having great sound, they are comfortable to wear, unlike any other in-the-ear style I have tried.

Well... while it is good bang for the buck, it is far from the best.
While I've not tried others, there are many many posts among the audiophile community that reviewed many buds and ex71 is considered serviceable... decent but not great.
It is comfortable tho.
Why would I trust those reviews and many many posts regarding the sony ex71/51 etc? because after hearing other *decent* headphone (my senn 497, anohter budget headphone ~60 but well regarded), I ca n totally hear the faults in the sony ex71.
The bass is overpowering and booming... thus its *muffled*. I guess its is undiciplined. The high hurts... My iniitial reaction were like yours, the presence of bass is just overwhelming when you had been using inferior factory headphones so you notice the immediate quantity, not the quality.
I am now thinking of getting a etymotic er6 or a shure e2c (prolly er6...) as most revew/posts claim the difference between them and the sony ex71 is day and nite.

I've done a little research on the etymotic er6, and the biggest thing I noticed was the price. $135 for those babies!

I'll just have to step down and accept your "best bang for the buck" theory!

run while you can!
I've since pre-ordered a portable headphone amp to give me extra ooompf and some refinement.
Last nite I just purchased an Audio-Technica A500 headphone and will probably purchase the er6 or shure e2 or e3 soon... kind of hurting.

oh, for anyone not comfortable with canal phone, a good alternative may be
http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/02ProductDetailCall?ReadForm&Portable+Stereophones ^KSC75
which seem like a worthy replacement for the ksc 35, which is pretty awesome for a low budget phone and very well regarded. All report seem to indicate it sounds very similar so I think I may be going to pick one up if a radio shack around carry it...
