Best GPS device for Axim x3i is....?
What are your opinions of the best seriel GPS device working with your x3i? Is it possible to simultaneously connect GPS and charge the Axim?

Also, what are your favorite software programs you use in conjuction with your device?

hi, only just started looking into a gps system for my x3i, don't know what the best system is but I went with a garmin etrex, its about the cheapest gps reciever i could find with a pc/ppc conncetion.

I belive most cables allow you to charge the axim whilst the gps is connected, at least the cable i ordered does

Not much on the axim at the mo, just updated to the A02 rom. I usually only have wolfclock (freewware alarm clock), themeswitcher, pocketstreets, oziexplorer and ce paint on all the time, and add other proggys as i need them

I have Garmin Etrex (serial) which I hope to use with my Axim x30. I have ordered a serial cable to go between the Garmin cable DB9 connector and the multi connecter. I really like the Garmin, readout is simple, just set a waypoint to where your going most of the information is on your Garmin. If you get lost you can find your exact location the AXIM. I should have my cable in a few days, I plan to use it with a version of MS Streets and Trips I happen to have.

i'm about a month or two away from purchasing the blue logger from earthmate www.earthmate.com . it has tracking features that will track gps waypoints without the pda/laptop/desktop being on. you can then hook them up via bluetooth and see where you've been. you can also do realtime navigation with any bt enabled device. they are coming out with pda bluelogger manager software, which in my opinion should be mandatory. all in all looks like a sweet device for not that much money. i also already ordered delorme's topousa software and am planning on using this hiking/packing/camping, etc. the fact that i do not need the axim on all the time to track where i'm at is a huge plus for me. i think there are some reviews of the blue logger around.....you may want to check them out.

hello all... I have had my x30hi for over a month. I want to get envolved with geocashing. What are you views as to.. 1. going with a Garmin or Magellan or 2. getting Globalsat SD-501 SDIO GPS that will go with the x30? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am planning a trip to Mexico soon and want to do some geocashing. I already have the sites picked...need a gps

just a thought....why don't you take advantage of the bluetooth on your x30 and use the blue logger? i know some people like it on the handheld itself, but the bluetooth communication puts gps right on the axim without wires or a protrusion from the top of your x30.

it does real time navigation, etc. i don't know on sdio battery drain vs. bluetooth battery drain. does the sdio device you mention have it's own battery supply? it will drain the battery much quicker if it pulls power from the axim. the blue logger has around a 8-9 hour actual battery time. it's rated to 8 i believe, but one review stated it actually lasted consistantly around 9 hours each charge.

check out the above link to earthmate i posted.

I got the cable I ordered a few days ago and my GPS seems to work just fine with my Axim. MS Streets and Trips works good enough for what I need.

Cable is from Pc-Mobile pn PX3GS in case one is interested.

I wouldn't mind having a BlueTooth unit either as the wires can be annoying.

If you're gonna be in the car, try the Earthmate by DeLorme http://www.delorme.com/earthmate/ I've had no problems with mine, and have been using it in my camper for about five months now. It either runs off of a cord for power only or can use batteries for a completely wireless option.

I believe it runs about $129 for the battery pack option or just 99 bucks for the gps and wires. Both should use BlueTooth.

You really should drop by www.gpspassion.com and see what they have to say. After a lot of research there I went with....

Hardware - RoyalTek BlueGPS Mini RBT-1000 XT (Xtrac V2)
Software - Space Machine PocketMap Navigator USA

You really shouldn't go with a SDIO GPS unit right now. Maps take a lot of space and will easiely fill your built in storage and memory. Untill SDIO GPS comes out with memory I would hold out on SDIO. I also have Pocket Streets, but it really dosent compare to GPS navigation software. You can not plan out trips/destinations on Pocket Streets.

Exnay on the sdiogps
I agree, I bought a used X3 for $99 bones on Ebay, along with a Globalsat sdio gps$89 and MSFT S&T $19, two maps and you're out of memory. Besides, there's limited Door to door directions. I'd look at Mapopolis if you need door to door. Although the synthetic voice prompts are terrible. Or get a USB/bluetooth gps. Save that sd slot for a 1Gb mem card.

a quick plug for the blue logger. have had it a month and use it with mapopolis. very slick device with excellent routing. the synthetic voice is a little cheesy, but according to a thread at gpspassion.com a new beta is working with real human voices.

the included software (street atlas 2005 handheld) is quite inadequate. compared to mapopolis' routing and rerouting features and speed, sh 2005 hh doesn't compare. kind of sad the software is subpar, but still for the cost.....the blue logger is well worth it.

i couldn't be happier. if you have an x30 or any pda with bluetooth capability, definatly get a bt gps. i'll put in a vote for the blue logger.
