Very much a matter of personal preference. I personally like the Sony in-ear noise-cancelling headphones (I have the MDR-NC10, the MDR-NC11 is out now). However, the size of those is a bit larger for everyday use than I'd like. I recently picked up a cheap pair of earbud headphones from Radio Shack and am not at all happy with the sound quality (whaddaya expect for $10?). I think the sound quality on the Axim with the MDR-NC10 is better with 64Kbps music than a cheap pair of headphones with 128Kbps music. In other words, I feel the headphones make a much bigger difference in audio quality than the "quality level" setting in WMP. Both are important, but getting the right headphones is important, so you're smart to ask this forum. I also look forward to reading others opinions on this.
I've asked Santa to bring me a stocking stuffer of the Sony MDR-EX51LP -- again, the in-ear design I like, but not nearly as big as the noise-cancelling variety. Plus, unless you're on a plane, the noise-cancelling isn't tremendously useful (and even adds a slight 'hiss' as part of the noise-reduction process). Again, it's personal preference. I've always preferred the in-ear designs for 'walking around' earphones. However, at home I religiously use a pair of studio headphones with a cushion around the ear. Since you're looking for your Axim, I assume you're looking at a portable choice -- not studio headphones. So, my recommendation would be the Sony MDR-EX51LP, but am looking forward to reading additional recommendations.
My Ax is an X3i. My player is the built-in (WMP 9 series on Windows Mobile 2003). At home I use WMP 10 on Win XP SP2. At work I use WMP 9 on Win2K. I have 2 SD cards - one 256MB and one 512MB, both are mostly used for music.
