X30- Necessary accessories
I'm new to this site and I just bought a new X30. It will be shipped on or about the 6th of Dec. I haven't bought anything for it yet, but I'm going to need a case, synch/power cable (I travel quite a bit), 1G memory card. I'd also appreciate any advice on other necessary periphials, and where the best place to purchase them would be.

I bought the Axim to replace my Palm m500, and I'm looking forward to getting it. I've enjoyed this site, but I must admit that for someone not "up to speed" with all this technology, it's a little overwhelming.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Get a nice case. Whats best depends on the battery you decide to use. If you want to be powered by the stock 950 and have one of those 4xAA chargers that go in the bottom for extended trips (Aka use on a long plane ride), then you can get a metal case. However, if you want the 1800mAh Mugen extended battery or any such larger size, you need a leather case, as there is not a metal case that will accomidate the bigger battery. However there are those who have taken a dremel to an alum case and managed to "fit" an extended battery.

Get a Boxwave screen protector. Everyone has been extremly pleased with them, theyre pretty expensive, but the main point is theyre washable, reusable, and dont use adhesive, so unless you physically damage it, it will last the life of the PDA.

You might think about some bluetooth accessories. The big ones are GPS and a keyboard. I've never used a BT keyboard, but the IR one I have works fine, so I can only imagine that BT is better. I've also never used GPS on my Axim (due to the connector on the bottom crapping out, thats another thing, be VERY careful with anything you plug into the bottom), but a lot of others have used GPS, and have had great success with it.

Good luck!

Although Kronchev and I may disagree poltically (based on his signature) we agree on essential accessories.

I support the idea of buying additional cradles for charging your Axim in various places (i.e. work) where you might not Sync, and also for the ability to charge a second battery.

As for SD cards, I'm newly committed to buying high speed SD cards rather than standard...one of my folders I was using in Pocket Excel was messed up the other day, and I think it was due to the speed of the card. I moved instead to a 32x card, and no more problems.

I also suggest looking at Ebay for batteries and cases, although you should also check out the cases available at aximcases and lion batteries, as they are sponsors of Aximsite.

I personally think it's worth having 950 mAh batteries for $20 shipped rather than one 1800 mAh Dell battery. Sadly, I bought my 1800 mAh battery at the time of purchase, not knowing this.

Hello and welcome to Aximsite, The Innopocket metal cse would be a good choice as I travel too it proteck the unit very well. I have a 32X Lexar 512 Mb card and it is fast and reliable. Universal cable from Belkin were what I bought originally. I still use them.

and welcome to our community. You'll find a treasure trove of information and tons of people in the same situation as you willing to help. If you ever have any questions or comments: Aximsite is the place to go.

I know the anticipation of your new Axim can be almost overwhelming because I waited 3 weeks for mine. It's very smart for you to take this time to figure out what you'll need and want before you get your Axim in your hands. I had screen protectors and a Rhinoskin Aluminum Hard Case in my hands a week before I received my Axim:

As for accessories, in order of importance:

1. Sturdy Case: I prefer a RhinoSkin Aluminum hard case, but you CAN'T use it with an extended battery unless you cut a hole in the back and fit it properly. There is a full array of great aluminum and leather cases which can be found at Aximcases.

2. Quality Screen Protector: Brando and Writeshield are highly prized and cheaper than Boxwave. (I've had bad dealings with Boxwave recently so I can't recommend them, sorry).

3. Extra Battery: A 2nd standard 950mAh battery is fine. It'll fit in ANY case- leather, Aluminum or otherwise. But since you travel often, I would suggest you to look into an Extended Battery but remember that you can't use it with any Hard Cases, basically only special Leather Cases will fit it. You can choose from an 1800mAh battery which is about double the battery life of the standard battery or you can also choose a Mugen battery that adds a little bit more battery life: 2000mAh and an enhanced "standard" battery of 1100mAh (the 1100mAh can fit into any case).

4. Large SD Card: You only have ONE slot with the X30 so you have to make the best of it. Get the LARGEST size you can afford. I would suggest a 1GB SD card. Don't buy anything less than 512MB or you'll soon find you're running out of space QUICKLY especially since you travel a lot and I'm sure you'll want to bring along a movie or two, MP3s, and pictures of your family for those long flights/trips.

5. Travel/Car Charger: Again, since you travel a good deal this is a no-brainer.

6. External Keyboard: If you enter a good deal of text, revise text documents, or deal with spreadsheets, you should definitely look into an External Keyboard. You have a wide range to choose from including Bluetooth, InfraRed, Foldable and Thumbkeyboards. Depending on your tastes and personal needs, choose accordingly. I chose a Dell Foldable Keyboard.

What's a 4xAA charger? Is it a pack that accepts 4 AA batteries, and plugs into the Axim? Directly, or via a cable?

Where to buy?

Thanks

I would say a keyboard, i have the Targus IR wireless one and its great. screen protectors, not dell, boxwave like everyone else said. An SD card, doesnt matter what size, they are getting cheaper though. and also very useful if you travel is a GPS. i got the Belkin BT Wireless GPS and its amazing...got it for 140. thats just about it from me, some other things that people said could be useful but i havent found a reason for a new battery (however that s a good thing to get) and maybe a new case, but again its something i would like but not a need as much as some other people, yet. good luck with your new toy!

Get the Belkin SnapNtype thumboard, or an IR or BT keyboard, if you prefer. Since you mentioned sync'ncharge cables, I can recommend the ZipLinq brand - they make a retractable cable, plus car lighter adapter and wall plug -

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses. I ended up getting a 1G Sandisk SD card from Newegg, WriteSHIELD screen protector, Piel Frama case that fits an extended battery, 2000mAh battery from Lion Battery, and the travel cable from Dell. I'm sure that I'll pick up some other stuff as I figure out all of the capabilities of the Axim. I'm going to search the threads for information on software packages and free downloads to make life easier. Any comments on this would also be appreciated. This is a fantastic site with so many people willing to share their experiences and knowledge. Thank you.
