New x30 on the way, $100 accessory budget - What do you think I should buy?
My x30 is scheduled to arrive sometime around Christmas and I want to start buying accessories for it, hopefully not exceeding $100. I will be using my x30 to satisfy all of my appurtenances as a student; this includes taking notes, recording lectures, reports, homework, research, and calculations (graphing). In addition, I will be using it for movies, music, internet, games, and reading books. The aesthetics of my ppc also matter to me. In your opinion, taking what I will be using my ppc for into account, what do you think my first accessories should be? Software? memory card? case? keyboard? anything else I forgot? Please help a newb.

Tricky question.

The keyboard you want (bluetooth by Think Outside -- same as Dell sells with their name on it) is $100. To do all the data entry you want to do...that's going to be a priority.

You'll also want a SD card...great sale on Lexar 32x 1GB cards...

http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/de...mo_id~2222.asp

$66 w/ free shipping (taxes applicable)

As for recording lectures, it's a free utility that records in Mp3 format...

http://www.zavorine.net/wince/mp3.htm

Movies...you'll need the SD card again...

Get the free BetaPlayer (http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/) and then convert DVDs to movies using DVDShrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html) and then encoding to .avi format with PocketDivXExcoder (http://divx.ppccool.com/)

Also, consider a screen protector, such as boxwave's screen protectors (and others will have other suggestions) (http://www.boxwave.com/) and an additional 3 pack of styli (http://www.usedhandhelds.com/nustore...ageHistory=cat)

Then spend lots of time reading here at aximsite, and spend some time in the FAQs on the front page!

Welcome aboard!

I would reccomend liek Choir said a 1 GB SD for movies and Mp3s. i would next get some kind of hard case if you think that is suitable for you. That should put you right around 90 spent. Then get some kind of boxwave screen protector or maybe even a car charger. JDH

Welcome to Aximsite!

As Choirguy suggested, a keyboard and more memory will be helpful. If you find BT keyboards too expensive, you always get an IR one for now. They work just as well but require line of sight. Another suggestion would be to get a good case. Depending on your environment, there are hard cases, leather cases, waterproof cases, etc.

Storage to start is important as you will need it for your recording, notes and reports. 1Gb card will take most of your $100. Look into users MY PDA section for Freeware links. Members Rob1303, bondr006 have very detailed view My PDA section.

Thank you for the advice everyone. From your posts I would say buying a 1GB SD card, case, and some screen protectors may be able to fit my budget, might go a little over. Next on my list will be a keyboard; I can't imagine inputing pages of data into a ppc using the stylus. As far as the IR keyboard in comparrison to the bluetooth keyboard do you think paying more for a bluetooth is worth the money? I am assuming the only disadvange when using IR is having to keep the ppc in line of sight with the keyboard, but don't you have to keep the ppc in line of sight anyway to see what is being typed?

Being a story writer, I use my Axim X30 for most of my work and I have been quite happy with the simple Dell foldable keyboard which will save you a bit of cash, and it enables you to power up your pda while in use. Happy Christmas!

Line of sight between the Ir Port of a Keyboard and the Ir Port (on top) of the Axim
is a far different thing as compared to your visual line of sight to the screen.
And could be a bit tricky if your school has the typical Kindergarten size desks!

You should also learn to never ASSuME.

ROTFL! Yes my schools have those. I haven't brought in my keyboard into class b/c of this....stupid desks!

BTW, welcome djr3322 to AximSite! You'll need at least a 512MB card, IR/bluetooth keyboard if you can bear it, nice rhinoskin case and a car adapter!

keyboard from ebay
As a graduate student I have found a keyboard quite useful. I found one on ebay for around $40 a few months ago. You might be able to get one for even less. It was Dell's basic keyboard (not bluetooth), new, and I find it works very well.

I currently use the Dell foldable keyboard for taking class notes. It works fine for me. I use the built in notes program because it allows me to directly import my notes into Microsoft OneNote and create a virtual notebook for each of my classes.

I beleive the microsoft is giving a free 60 day trial of OneNote. You may want to give it a try.

ps. Be careful that the case and keyboard you buy are compatible. It's a pain to take it out of the case everytime you want to enter data.
