Cleaning Screen
What is the best/safest way to clean the screen before applying a Boxwave or similar screen protector? I have a bottle of the same screen cleaner that comes with the Writeshield packages - along with some of their wipes - will this be sufficient? what other materials can be used on the screen besides the really nice no-lint cloths? Thanks in advance!

I've been known to use any semi-soft paper product (unused and fresh off the roll or out of the box), my shirt tail, bedsheet or pillow case, bath towel..........hell......whatever's handy and cleaner (and softer) than the screen. I've also often just dragged smudges around on the screen with my thumb 'til they're invisible.

.
.

IM(not soH)O..........screen protectors are totally unecessary. If you're careful (which I'm not), you won't get anything more than invisible "skritchies" that can only be seen with the screen OFF and held at just a particular angle.

As I said, I'm not all that careful, I've had 5 PDAs in the last 5 years and NONE of 'em have any major scratches on 'em.

I read an interesting post in another forum, awhile back, which postulated that screen protectors were intentionally made of slightly softer material than the screens they are protecting........so that, when you take an old one off to replace it, it is "horrendously" scratched, etched and hazy in order to prove how good a job it was doing!

Not completely implausible!

I much prefer to go runnin' 'round NEKKIT, myself!!

It is most inadvisable to use any liquid cleaner on a PDA screen. It can leak into the PDA or betwen the digitiser and the screen element below.

In any event it is not necessary. I clean my screen the same way I clean my glasses - breathe on it and rub gently with a clean handkerchief or the cleaning cloth supplied by opticians.

Interesting. I wonder why Writeshields come with such a cleaner then. Can anyone that's purchased a Writeshield chime in?

Your best bet would be to go to your local Best Buy or electronics store, and get a microfiber cleaning cloth for either LCD monitors, or one for camera lenses. You can even find them with a kind of 'cleanser' chemical in them. Just be careful, because sometimes you'll find one with silicone in it, and you don't want that type for screens.

I found those cloth that came with your eye glasses to be the best for cleaning LCD and other type of glass material products (ex. PDA screen), beside they were made for cleaning glasses LOLz!

Probably so that you can clean the protector when it is off the PDA. I stand by what I said about using liquids on the PDA screen.

I installed a PPC Tech WriteShield screen protector today on my new X30. Unlike my prior experience installing a protector to an Axim 5, the technique described below resulted in a perfectly installed protector on my first try with no lint or dirt specs trapped under the protector. I am so happy. I really hate to have to remove a misaligned protector and reinstall it. To give proper credit I tried this after seeing another post on this site that described using a single strip of cellophane so I am indebted to that poster.

1. Applied two strips of masking tape about 5 inches long (I did not have any cellophane tape) across the narrow width , one near the top and one near the bottom sticking it to the actual top surface of the protector. One end of the each tape was folded over so that the sticky tape only extended on one side, the other side is to be used as a sort of handle.
2. I then placed the protector with its plastic carrier on the Axim locating exactly as I wanted it to be when finished.
3. Without moving the protector/carrier I stuck the sticky portion to the frame at one side of the Axim. I then had a hinge that allowed me to lift the protector up and replace it exactly in the location I wanted it,
4. I then cleaned the screen with the supplied cleaner material, dried it with the supplied lint-free cloth, and lowered the protector down onto the Axim screen (after peeling off the backing from the screen protector).
5. A few minutes squeezing out a couple of air bubbles using a credit card and I had a perfectly positioned protector with absolutely no material trapped underneath.

As far as the use of the alcohol based cleaning cloth supplied by PPC Techs, I think there is no problem with this affecting the digitizer screen since the amount of liquid transferred from the damp tissue is so small. If you got enough liquid to extend past the screen and perhaps leak down into the Axim internal parts, you might have a disaster on your hands.

Since my previous experience resulted in the ScreenWrite outlasting my Axim, I believe the two protectors will be all I ever need. My only gripe is the cost of shipping (maybe I selected the wrong shipping method) which was over $10. They could have put into an envelope and mailed it for less than $1.
