Flash card speeds
Hi All,

I want to buy a 1GB SD card for my axim x30, but cannot find any data on that speed / spec card I should purchase. For example I've seen a 'x45' PQI card that states a read datarate of 7.7MB/sec (write = 6.8) is this fast (fast enough)?? are PQI a devcent make?? Opinions gratefully Rx'd

Al.

There are a lot of resources around the Internet regarding CF and SD speeds. No doubt many people will weigh in on this topic, but I will just say this:

Stay away from SANDISK! Their SD cards have known issues with Axims and their base level CF cards (not the Ultra or UltraIII) are among the slowest cards ever made.

Put simply, do some research, and whatever you do, don't buy the cheapest you can find, unless you are willing to put up with it being a slow card.

you shouldnt be so quick to say stay away from sandisk. i have a sandisk 1gb card and my brother has 2 256mb cards that are used in our x30s and we have had no problems at all. they are alot of other people with no problems either. though i do recall that sandisk had compatibilty problems with axims before, but that problem has been fixed.

Right now, from our test results, and mainly in the area of write speed (which I think is connected to the situation where directories disappear), I would recommend any of the cards there with the exception of Sandisk and Kingmax cards. The write speed of these cards is much slower than any of the alternatives. I understand fully that there are users who have not had any problems with these cards, but I know (from personal experience) that there are users who have had problems with these cards, too...and I do admit that we saw one thread on one goofy Lexar (I need to follow that up).

I'd really suggest ATP at the moment...they have a representative lurking here on Aximsite, and he answers e-mails. The performance of these cards--IN AXIMS--is comparable to any other, so the customer service factor might be the swing vote in my opinion. As you can see in MyPDA, I've been a Lexar man since my Sandisk troubles, with no regrets.

My main issue is that the base level CF card (the predominantly blue one) is just the slowest card ever. I can't even listen to WMA files from it reliably because it can't provide data fast enough, and forget about watching video!

I read that and said, "WOAH!" CF on an X30? Then I realized you were an X5 owner.

Part of your issue, cribbagewiz, is that it seems that the hardware on the X5 is slower than than of newer axim models. I suppose that is logical, but the X5 certainly seems to read/write slower in nearly all cases I've seen reported.

No doubt, the Sandisk standard CF card seems to be testing slow. If you had the funds, I'd suggest trying one of the Lexars (and by the way, there seems to be no reason to buy the 80x CF card, either) and seeing if that does any better for you.

Thanks... I've just got a PDi (x30)1GB card. Seems to work well. Although it contains a file called "ignore_my_docs" which I cannot delete - any ideas ???
