Pharos GPS info
I've got the X30, and the Pharos Ostia 6. However, it's the one for an old PDA I used to use, a HP ipaq something or other. Now I'd like to be able to use the same stuff, but wireless. Anyone know what minimal stuff I need to do that? They (Pharos) are only interested in selling me the world when I call. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

PS - If you're selling yours, and it's compatible with mine, I'd love to know that too, as I may be interested.

All you should need is a bluetooth GPS receiver. I don't think it even has to be made by Pharos

mine was a gift, and it is the "wired" one, which is just plain messy. i'd recommend the bluetooth one to avoid that. it was $200. i'll give that a shot, cereal killer. if it works, that will be sweet.

I have the Pharos BT GPS Unit... and I like it. You are not married to any specific software... is should run independant from the hardware. On my BT I am not running the bundled Ostia but Mapopolis right now.

The nice thing about the Pharos unit is that the BT itself is on a sled... so if you want to buy the the other accessories for it you could mount it on a CF Card... or wire it to your device... assuming they have the cabling you need. They also provide with the BT unit a handy adapter that allows you to charge both the PocketPC and GPS unit at the same time.

Seems someone at Pharos was thinking when they designed it.

Nice! Do you know if Mapopolis is smaller than Ostia. Ostia takes up a TON of space! Oh yeah, and what is a sled, anyway?

If you have the wired model, all you need is a bluetooth dock
http://shopping.yahoo.com/search;_yl...ooth+Dock&did=

You just slide the old piece out. Charge the bluetooth battery, and slide in the receiver.

What I term as the sled is the actual receiver... it is the silver plastic piece. It should slide out of whatever unit you have, as mentioned you should be able to then just slide the receiver into the BT unit.

http://www.pharosgps.com/products/co...lash/PT300.htm

if you look enlarge the inset picture you will see the receiver in the CF Dock... and on the right you will see the receiver in the BT Dock.

As for the maps... they are all pretty large... I find it funny when I read the forums of people being upset that they can not load in all the maps of the US at one time... Like you need to be able have access to all of the US at a given time..? I keep mine rather simple... and only keep one Province (State) at a time. Since in reality I only need one region... If I am planning a trip I will just load the maps as they are required.

I have a 512mb CF Card that I use for storing mass media... such as music, video, and of course my maps... Then there is the 512mb SD Card that holds my applications and general files.

I've only got a 128 MB card...but I'm sure that will change as I gather more crap that I don't need. On the Pharos site, they say to insert the GPS receiver into any CompactFlash slot on your mobile device....what slot would that be?? I've only got so many slots...specifically one. And it's not for that. Is that just another option, or is it the only option? The BT option where you wirelessly connect your Pharos GPS receiver to your Bluetooth-enabled Pocket PC is the one I need, I'm thinking. Is that a separate thing than the compact flash one?

When you said you had the one with wires, I'm assuming you have the serial version of the Pharos kit.
http://www.pharosgps.com/products/dell/AximX3/PK041.htm

The little square receiver should slip right out of the dock. You should be able to put in in a bluetooth dock, that contains a rechargable battery. Search for Pharos Bluetooth Dock on yahoo shopping, you'll find a number of them for around $90.
http://shopping.yahoo.com/search;_yl...ooth+Dock&did=

If you didn't have that setup, you would want to pickup the entire bluetooth receiver
http://www.pharosgps.com/products/dell/AximX3/PT200.htm

Then you pair the devices without any wires.
This is how you would set it up
http://www.pharosgps.com/support/MobilePPC2003/01.htm

I think this is the setup your looking for

I've got the wireless setup now, but not really loving Ostia. I tried out Streets & Trips, and that had some really nice features like looking for specific banks, cuisines, etc, but the loading of maps was just a really stupid setup. I'm looking for one that's easy and I wouldn't even complain if they gave free updates.

new day, new issues
And I thought I was in a jam before...
So now we've got a Mac, which I just love. But now I've got compatibility issues with both my Axim X30 AND the Pharos Ostia software. Any ideas? I've tried Cross Over software for the Ostia problem, but my software hasn't been supported yet. Missing Sync is also a dud for me right now, mainly because I don't understand what exactly it's supposed to be doing for me. WHY won't companies just try a little harder to make things functional for mac users??? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
