Bluetooth USB Adapter
Can someone please explain to me what a Bluetooth USB Adapter is? I am trying to compile a list of all the accessories I will need to buy once I get my new X30H.

It's a stubby little thing like a USB thumbdrive that provides a Bluetooth connection for machines that don't have it built-in. Four important words, though: "Don't buy the Actiontec". I, to my misfortune, have two, and both have stopped working.

You plug the BT USB adapter into your desktop or laptop computer and then you have a wireless connection. You can sync this way and other things. Read the Bluetooth tutorial Bluetooth Tutorial here. You're gonna love it all.

You can find reasonably priced Bluetooth dongles at: Tiger Direct Bluetooth Those are short distance devices. There are now devices that will send Bluetooth a lot further.

Man, Tiger Direct has everything. I remember using it a few years ago to get price ideas for computer components...Ended up going elsewhere though.

You can surf internet on your PPC via BT connection to your PC. However, it will not be nearly as fast as if you install a WiFi router and access high speed cable via X30 built in WiFi (unless you have an X30 low which also would not have BT). Should be OK for discussion boards and possibly e-mail, but streaming video will likely be slow.

"Are the some that are better than others and how hard it is to hook up?"

If you are asking about BT USB adapters, can't answer cause I've not done it (but have read about others who have).

If you are asking about WiFi routers, I'm using a Netgear and it's awesome. In regards to set up. If all goes smoothly then it can be set up in an hour or so (follow directions careful or it could take you days/weeks). There was a glitch in my particular setup because cable company modem required a special additional setting and this was only found in cable companies help site. I'd recommend you do a good bit of search on this site and ask lots of questions regarding router set up before you jump in. Really pays to do homework in advance on this. However, once you get it set up it's wireless nirvana and it's really addicting. Good luck!

I was refering to usb bluetooth adapters. I don't want to dive into wireless internet yet because I will soon be moving into a new house, where I will then worry about it.

Couple of recommendations regarding BT USB Adapters:

1) Be sure to get a Class 1 USB Adapter. Class 1 has a range of 100m vs 10m and 30m for other Classes.
2) If you can find it also get v1.2 or newer BT. It is less succeptible to interference from wifi and other devices using the 2.4ghz frequency range. This is less important. My BT Dongle is v1.1 and I have not noticed and problems with interference with it.

Hi,

I use to use my BT dongle with a BT dialup modem to acces the internet, but I now have wifi at home, so I only use my BT dongle to sync my Outlook contacts with my cell phone and only occasionally use it for internet access. That linksys model you are looking at should be fine. I bought mine (not sure of the brand) on Ebay and it's done everything I've asked of it.

Using the Class 1 BT dongle with my Class 1 BT dialup modem worked great from several rooms apart.

Any ideas on whether the wireless internet on my PDA from the Bluetooth USB adapter will be slow? My PC is wired to Road Runner high speed cable internet via Linksys BEFSR41 cable router.
