Noise canceling headphones?
I know many of you use your Ax for mp3 playback. Are any of the less expensive noise canceling headphones worthwhile to look at? Brandsmart sells a Coby for $15. I have seen others in the 60-70 range. Of course, I suppose the Bose are the top of the line, but I just can't seem to pony up that kind of cash.

Anyone have any experience?

Here are several you can look through at Buy.com.

They are sorted by price.

RobMan,

Six months back, I had same dilemna - Bose too expensive. Found some Philips SBC HN100 noise cancelling head phones @ Circuit City (~$60 range) & took gamble. They have been awesome(especially good for use while flying). Do google search & read reviews. There are a few things to be careful about, but the reviews explained what to watch out for & as a result I've had zero problems. Only complaint is that if you want to listen to something & really crank up volume, it's a little too quiet (this may be because I'm too inexperienced in ripping CD songs). For the price this Phillips model has really been great. Friends have listened to music on my X30 through these headphones & remarked that the tunes sounded great - I agree.

I've got the Bose and have had the Sony noise cancelling bud earphones (about a third the price). You get what you pay for - the Bose are truly amazing. I wouldn't travel anywhere without them. On overnights I even turn them on without music playing and I sleep like a baby.

Thanks for your replies. I do agree that you get what you pay for ... I have spoken with a number of people who have the Bose and swear by them. Still, ouch with the price!

I only fly once or twice a month, but the noise canceling would be great. I might try out a $60 pair first. I can always give them to my daughter if I upgrade to the top-of-the line Bose in the future.

Thanks again!

Good 'sealed' headphones (as opposed to 'open air') do a very good job of blocking external noise. I've tried many different headphones over the years, and I like the Bose TriPort (not noise cancelling). They are on sale now for $129. Sennheiser is my second choice.

With headphones, you do tend to get what you pay for. Good headphones are an absolute joy to listen to, and personally, I will only use sealed-type.

Doug

Sealed earphones do better noise-cancelling than active noise-cancelling headphones like the Bose system. You should look into Shure E3(c)s. I have a pair, and they're great. They should be about $100. The only drawback is that they go in the ear, which some people don't like, but the're way more compact, you can sleep with them in for the most part, and they don't require extra batteries.

I second on the E3c's. I do not know where Krypticide got them for $100 but I did buy mine on ecost.com for 119 and that is the least expensive that I was able to find them with free shipping as well.

I was just guessing they were down to $100. microphonesolutions.com had good deals sometimes. I bought mine about a year ago, I think for $160.

I bought the Philips earbud noise cancelling earphones, and I've been surprised by both the function and comfort of them. I normally do not like earbuds at all.

I've noticed that they don't seem to "suck out the air" like my model 100 over-the-ear Phillips headphones did, but hey, what can you do?

Actually, I sent my headphones in to Philips months ago for a repair, and never got them back. I remember now, because that is why I bought the earbuds in the first place...I need to go to the Philips electronics website.
