I use Skype with just regular earphones and talk into the built in microphone on the Axim. It works great.

The mic on the Axim is great. However, if you choose not to do so, you can get earphones with a built-in mic from Seidio => http://tinyurl.com/chmeh
Gigi reviewed this product here.

Skpeout works OK. I've had spotty results. Sometimes it works great and people don't even know I'm calling. Sometimes it doesn't work so great. I think it might have something to do with the Skype servers as I usually connect with a know good connection. And it's here where it's hit or miss.
Although, you can't beat the price. I recommend the service--it's just not perfect.

yeah, that was one reason pushing me towards an X30M or H against a low....skype says it requires 400Mhz or more.....
I was thinking that while traveling abroad (I unfortunatly reside in the US currently) it would be nice to be able to stop at an internet cafe with a wifi hotspot and make a call for 1.7c a minute.....

Skype help
I just put skype on my Axim 30. I'm going up to Alaska via cruise ship. There's no wifi. Anyone know a way I can connect my Axim 30 to the ship's internet? I've been trying to find an SD modem or ethernet card. Does it exist and will it work?

Hey, sabrewench! If you're on a cruise in Alaska, you'd better switch off your Axim and have fun. That's why you paid $thousands to be on a ship going out to see polarice caps. And you're wondering about connecting back to the real world...
When on a cruiseship in Alaska, spend the time having MORE fun, and enjoy the spectacular scenaery, and savor it; and spend less time on worrying about being connected with your PPC.
This is my only sage advice to you.
Have a safe trip.

sabrewrench, I agree with lawman, but if you really must, there are some SD modems available (Pretec and Socket make them), but they are pricey:
Pretec
Alternatively, you could get a portable access point such as this one:
Asus WL-330g

Thanks Lawman... Trust me I will be having fun... but my better half won't be going... so I would like to stay slightly connected to the real world via internet and PDA.

I agree with Lawman. You are on a cruise to have fun and relax. There should be plenty to do, see, and enjoy (like the food). Take advantage of it while you can since that is why you spent $x1000 for. If there is a real emergency there are ways to contact the ship and get ahold of you.
I've gone on two crusies. Down to Mexico and around Cuba (Royal Carribean and Princess respectively). I did have my x30 for the Mexico trip and my e755 around Cuba. I used them to write down what I did and display the digital images that I took.
Most cruise ships have an internet center. The internet centers are not attended and require your cabin access card to use, so don't rely on any tech support. During the same cruise, I couldn't find a wireless access point that I could connect to. My sister-in-law used the center during the Mexico trip and she said it was nice....until she saw the charge.
Good luck and enjoy your time away from the World. :approve:

I hate to reply to a post I made, but today I connected to an unsecure network near my job and made a phone call with Skypeout using my Axim. My wife said it sounded like a regular phone call. Hmmm... that Skypeout in interesting.
When I made that call I had to be at least 200 feet from an access point. Anyway, I guess I'm plugging Skypeout with an Axim.
