This store has for 125 quid a barcode scanner, I want to know if anyone has found anything cheaper?
The amazing site
http://www.upcdatabase.com/ can be used to lookup entries (although I downloaded the database).
Whilst scanning barcodes (or in future rfid scanning on the go - bah, don't like rfid *shudder*) you could have a wifi connection to the lookup machine and get the info, but for my fun little software:
Go shopping, scan item, enter price... right now the PDA only knows a barcode and price.
But when it syncs the application on the computer can load the full database (although the full db can be on the pda too...) and keep track of which stores, and what times the costs of items are, and you can also OCR you receipt (I know, there needs to be a better way) to verify purchase costs.
Does that sound like penny pinching?
Imagine if you could offer this service to people - online somehow, that would give them statistics of their local supermarkets.
Have some shoppers using these devices, bring all the data together. If you read the recent walmart's opinion on google, they are scared that google will do this.
I am not thinking of paying 125 quid to try and save money shopping, if it wasn't for the fun of it I wouldn't bother :-)
Check out that upc database site, and give the guy a pat on the back from axim fans. :approve: :approve: :approve: :approve: :approve: :approve: :approve: :approve:
