Isn't it best to install to RAM?

I see a lot of people install everything to SD or CF card? Doesn't that load so much slower? Isn't it best to install to RAM which is a lot faster - I mean like 3-4 programs, not 1 GB worth of programs :)

I run most all programs out of bis or sd with no real noticeable loss of speed. I think keeping all the available ram free is more important.

Why do you need to keep ram free? I understand maybe 4-5 megs free, but after that doesn't the processor take most of the brunt of keeping the handheld running smoothly?

Well for me, it's primarily because of my GPS software (OCN5) which is REALLY memory hungry. I keep around 40mb free which is a bit overkill, but that way I can run a number of apps at the same time with no worries.

As long as you have space, go ahead and install to main memory. At some point you might run out, though. I originally installed most all programs to RAM, but after a hard reset and installing OCN decided to install to BIS and SD.

The processor has to have somewhere to offload and load data...that's the ram, and if you don't have enough of it, the processor gives up and the PDA can lock up. Mapping software such as Tomtom5 and OCN5 require roughly 20 megs of free ram before they will run properly, not to mention the fact that 4-5 megs of free ram won't get you far if you try to open more than one program at a time.

K, I run outlook and sometimes aim messenger at once.

I'm kind of suprised about the large numbers of people who use GPS software. It's kind of neat, but I wonder what you do with it? Do you track fossils :)

I have everything installed on BIS now, some games and other things I strictly do not depend on are installed on an SD card. Programs that leave data files in their own program folders go on the card too, to minimize the number of writings to the BIS. This lets me leave some 40 MB of RAM for running programs and almost all the time I have between 28 and 31 free. The only thing I still keep installed in RAM is SPB Pocket Plus but haven't tried on the BIS since the last version (2.x) didn't work well from there. Maybe someone knows if version 3.x works from BIS without locking up the Axim...

Built in Storage.

I run almost everything from BIS as well with no problems. Like Robman, OCN 5 is really memory hungry but I have found no issues with about 20 - 25 Mb free RAM. Of course just to be safe, I also shut down WA2 before running OCN.

Say what?

Personally I do a lot of driving for my job and GPS helps me make sure that I get where I need to be. I's a great help at night when turns are harder to see.

Yeah, a GPS gives you your coordinates on earth (like latitude, longitude, elevation). You must have one of those units that give driving directions. GPS has primarily been used by the military and geologists.

Couldn't you just use yahoo maps? You do know that you can download these for free from avantgo? Although they probably won't have the fancy graphics.

Here's an example:

Yahoo maps are only useful for giving you a general idea of a small area and only when you've got an internet connection to get them if you didn't know ahead of time where you would be going. Right now I have the entire US on my SD card and can fire up the GPS and Tomtom any time I need some directions or simply a better idea of the area I'm in.
