you said "JUST" you must charge it for about 8 hours first.
If you did, then you have a bad battery
It was a used axim and it had been charged for atleast that. so I am doing an overnight charge to see what happens. if the battery is bad what options do I have, do you know? Out of warrenty.
If this is a used X3, the backup battery could be dead. Try charging the unit overnight. If you receive the same error, you'll need to purchase and install a new backup battery.
Replacement involves dissasembling the unit. Also, I've not been able to find replacement batteries for the X3. If anyone knows where they can be purchased, please let us know.
I aggree to wooch.
During shipping, the chances are, that, unless it was overnight and 2nd day and the person fully charged it, the chances are that the battery is dead

I have the same issue. So, how do I replace the backup?

As I said, the problem is going to be getting the backup battery. You'll have to see if you can find some X3 disassembly instructions, and you'll be able to find the battery.

The battery shouldn't be too difficult to locate. Don't know 'bout the X3 but, might you try "paid" service from Dell?
I wouldn't think the charge would be that much?

Dell Axim x30. I was swapping out the regular battery for the extended battery, and the whole thing reset itself on me during the switch. Had to re-load all my programs. For a couple of days it was pop the message that the backup battery is dangerously low. It's supposed to charge when the unit is in the cradle, right? Now the "Backup battery" state says "Normal" in Settings --> Power.
I bought everything new in June. Is it commonplace for the internal backup battery to not be able to hold a charge that quickly?

After u put pda in cradle, u must quickly turn unit on then off and leave it alone overnight to allow it to Charge backup batery. Just Changing batteries if u have spare ones wont charge buck up batteries . (that's how i emptied by backup battery) and pda will die even if u have fresh battery installed. If it Doesn't work, take main battery off, leave unit overnight, then Put freshest battery u have on, place on cradle, QUICKLY turn on & off unit and leave to Charge overnight, Then remove unit and Quickly do a soft reset. Worked 4 me. I used 2 just swap batteries, I accidentally drained my backup battery that way, Someone told me to do this, worked, hope it works 4 u.
To get my Backup Battery to 100%, I simply leave it charge overnight with the device turned on. I have the power settings set so that it will not turn off when on external power, but set the screen to turn off after a minute or 2 of inactivity.
