Hotspots

I had my Ax up and running and it worked really well on Wi-Fi using my home network.

About 2 weeks ago I was at Manchester Airport and tried to gain access - I couldn't because the Wi-Fi there was encrypted and I would have to pay which I didn't want to do (I was just waiting to pick up passengers, so was just killing time).

I have not been able to log on to my home network ever since. I was at the GMEX Manchester Exhibition centre a week later and boy the number of hotspots there! But I couldn't get access to any of them and I still can't access my home network. What could have gone wrong?

Need some more details. What ax? what OS? can you see scan and detect the hotspots. Are you using the Wlan utility? are you using Odyssey?

Sorry, I guess that would help!

I've got the X30h with Windows 2003 SE. I can see and detect all the hotspots. The toolbar at the top of the screen shows the connection arrows in both directions as if connected. The green bars at the bottom of the screen don't stay still as they did before when they were connected, they each turn green in turn and then go back to grey. I'm not sure about WLan or Odyssey though I know I've got them both on my screen - before I just pressed the Wi-Fi button and I was online and it worked great until I tried it at the airport.

When my ax tries to connect, it finds the correct channel and network but keeps on searching.

If I try to connect to the web while the Ax is docked, I can surf away to my hearts content. If I try to do the same by Wi-Fi I get the Internet Explorer message "The page you are looking for cannot be found".

PS Thank you so much for your quick reply, it was much appreciated. I'm going on a city break tomorrow and my hotel has free wi-fi connection so I would love to try it out!

Hope you get this before your leave in the morning! I assume you have soft reset the device. :)

After that I would delete all of your previously defined connections and if you have a some kind of clean-up software like memmaid I would use that.

On an x50v with 2003se, you have a wlan utility that turns wifi on. Some people connect thru that I haven't had much luck.

I turn it on there and go to the oddysey program, which is also on the connections page. Delete any previously defined connections here as well. Then scan a reset up your connection for home and see if it works.

i had the same problem. Eventually i was able to gain access on our home wi-fi.
i found that if i turn off the encryption, i connect faster.

At one point i was ready to return my SDIO card, but now i connect to just
about everything. Nothing has changed.

What i have been checking is what programs are running, and turn off
all unneeded programs to free up memory.

xGood luck

Snap!

Just having the very same problem myself (X30 High, 2003SE). Usually my Axim connects to my home WiFi (Netgear 834G) with no problems, athough it usually has problems elsewhere. The other week I connected to an unsecured (silly them!) hotspot to send some mail.

Then on Sunday I switch on my Axim and it wouldn't connect! I hadn't changed anything, and the Wifi is still good as my PS2's wireless bridge still works. The Axim shows the SSID, channel, and the fact that I'm using WEP OK, but it just can't seem to grab an IP.

It did work when I briefly turned off WEP completely, so maybe the key has got screwed up somehow? I'll have to spend some quality time tonight typing in the WEP key again, with capitals (just in case).

I had this same problem on my X30H this past weekend (and a couple of other times in the past). While away for Thanksgiving weekend... I connected to several open wifi hotspots. Upon returning home, I could not connect to my home network that is WEP protected. Here is how I resolved my problems: (1) deleted my home network from Dell WLAN utility (e.g., remove settings); (2) executed the welcome file found in the windows folder (this fix discussed elsewhere on this site); and (3) soft reset a couple of times. This did the trick. I hope it works for you... as I know it can be pretty a frustrating situation, that always makes me hesitant to connect to other hotspots. :)

Worried Doh!

I've now got WiFi working... unfortunately for me I accidentily did a hard reset instead of a soft one (DOH! ). Luckilly I had a recent data backup. I also managed to mess up the partnership with my PC, but lots of swearing later it all works.

Anyway I'm sure removing the network, running some soft resets and re-entering the WEP key would have done the trick!

Wow, I NEVER have any trouble with wifi, and I connect to hotspots all the time. I don't even bother to delete the other profiles, and it still connects to my home network as if nothing had ever happened, encryption, SSID hidden and all. Now I really think my Linksys router is great (It was one of the earliest models, simply 802.11b. ):D.

I heard the government is flooding the whole city of New Orleans with Hot Spots. It will run at 512kbps.
