Help me avoid a hard reset

I did a search on this but found nothing.

I currently sync my axim with my desktop. I bought a new notebook and would like to sync with my notebook now (and remove the partnership with the desktop). So far I've moved all my relevent email to the notebook, and all notes, contacts, and tasks. I've also installed activesync on the notebook but have not done any syncs yet. How should I go about doing the sync? I'm guessing delete all my emails, notes, contacts, and tasks from the axim, but won't these get deleted from my notebook on the first sync? That's why I think I have to do a hard reset, but I'm guessing there is an easier way.

I also don't want to have to reinstall all my software on the notebook, such as avanto, spb today, aim, etc. Does it matter if I have software on the pocket pc that is not installed on my notebook?

Thanks.

I would recommend backing up your axim using the built in utility. Then connect your ppc to your new computer and see what happens. If anything goes wrong, you can restore the backup. Nothing should be erased from the device after syncing with a new computer, but still back up just incase anything goes wrong.

But the problem is, my axim contains about 1000 emails. My new notebook used to contain that many, but I deleted most of it since it is old. I don't want to reintroduce it with the axim. I also don't want to change the folder hierarchy on outlook on the notebook.

1. Always back up first. Then tell Active Sync on the laptop to win any arguements. Open Active Sync, Options > Rules > Set Conflict Resolution to "Always replace the item on my device".

2. Of the many programs that have installation routines that put applications on my desktop to put application on my X5,I've removed most if not all of them from my Add/Remove programs on the PC without that action affecting the apps on the X5.
