As you can probably tell, I have both an Axim and an iPod which I sync with my computer. When one item is connected to the computer, I have a problem getting the other to connect. For example, when the iPod is connected to the computer, I then pop my Axim in it's cradle. Instead of starting up ActiveSync and connecting, the computer will make the New Hardware connection sound, sit for about 10-15 seconds, then make the New Hardware disconnection sound. This will happen 3-5 times in a row before the Axim finally connects and syncs. The opposite also happens when the Axim is already connected to the computer and I go to connect the iPod. The iPod will not appear in iTunes and sync unless I disconnect and reconnect it to the computer about 3-5 times. When I connect either item by itself, it syncs immediately with the computer.
Both the Axim and the iPod connect to the computer via USB 2.0. The Axim cradle is plugged into one of the USB ports in the back of the computer while the iPod is plugged into one of the ports on the front. The computer is a Dell Optiplex running Windows XP Pro with SP2 as well as the latest editions of iTunes and ActiveSync. The iPod is a 60GB Video iPod with the latest firmware and the Axim is a 624Mhz x30 with the latest BIOS from Dell installed.
The pc probably thinks the axim and ipod are the same thing. It then only wants one running at a time, and this screws up the other. I read this somewhere on putting in 2 usb flash drives, that they wont work right, and its probably the same with this one. It Microsoft were smart they'd give the axim priority over the ipod. LOL

Get yourself a powered USB hub. Plug it into the PC, and then plug the devices into the hub. Do them one at a time so that the computer can find them and register them on their new ports.
Or do what I did. My Dell XPS is about 5 years old and wouldn't take a USB 2.0 upgrade card, so I bought a FireWire add-on card. My iPod photo syncs on FireWire and the Axim uses the USB. Total cost was $35 and now I can handle both kinds of devices.

Any ideas?
I don't think that iPod and Axim hate each other in this case. I have X51v, a 2nd generatin iPod (firewire), and a 2nd iPod mini (USB2) connect to a Dell Inspiron 8200 via a Firewire/USB2 combo PC card, I never have problems like yours. It could be something else problematic on your puter.
Could the total power usage be right on the edge, just enough to trip the breaker? Try plugging the devices into ports not in the same group (e.g. plug your Axim into a rear port and the iPod into a front port).
Have you tried using WiFi sync?
Have you tried updating the USB controller drivers?

I'm already plugging the Axim into a rear port and the iPod into the front port.
I haven't WiFi synced but I have Bluetooth synced without any problems.
I have not tried updating the USB controller drivers. I'll have to hop on the Dell site and check for an update. I've done all the Windows updates already.

Yes, but I'd wager that both sets of USB ports are using the same power supply. You also haven't told us about any other USB devices so if you have some, just bear in mind that the total power available on the USB bus is divided among all of the devices attached to the bus. Putting one or more devices on a powered hub (which are generally designed to get maximum power to all of the devices connected to it) may solve this problem.

Sounds like a powered hub might be my best bet, then. I'll pick one up and let y'all know what happens.
By the way, I have the Axim cradle, a Lexmark printer, a Canon scanner, a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse, and the iPod on USB 2.0 on my machine.

The keyboard and mouse's wireless receiver probably draws the most current on a consistent basis. The others probably only draw current when they're in use. If your Canon scanner is like mine and gets its power solely from the USB bus, it would be a big hit when it's being used.
Grab thyself a hub and report back with your findings! :approve:

You're right, the Canon scanner draws all it's power from the USB bus. However, I haven't used the dumb thing in weeks, so I don't know how much power it draws while in "standby".
Would you (or anybody else reading this) have any recommendations for a powered USB 2.0 hub?

The scanner probably isn't the big draw. The wireless keyboard/mouse receiver would be my guess. It wouldn't draw much, but it would be drawing it consistently.
As for a recommendation on a hub...heck, just about everybody makes one. Go to Staples or Office Depot and see what you can get. They're generally in the $20-$30 range. Just make sure it says it's USB 2.0 and that it comes with its own plug-in AC adapter.
