Well look what Microsoft is reportedly working on...

http://www.webuser.co.uk/news/news.php?id=81155

The device mentioned here sounds kind of like Sony's PSP thingy.

Now I can't remember, do those have hard drives of some sort or is it a flash-type memory? Permanent or memory cards? Well anyway.

I also read an article recently about Microsoft attempting to create another class of devices in between handhelds or mobiles and notebooks, like an ultra-sub-notebook, that would supposely run XP (or Vista whatever desktops are running at the time), and cost about $400.

I really wish I could find the exact article. I don't know where I read it, but it did refer to the Origami Project. There are several items on engadget, as well as a website called http://www.origamiproject.com.

I love my Axim, but ultimately I bought a subnotebook (a 10" laptop by Averatec) myself, so I sound like their target market for sure!

It's just kind of weird that Microsoft seems to be getting more and more into hardware and devices.

no, i do not want a PSP-sized monstrosity in my pocket anytime soon. a harddrive = space + battery. Unless you add an extra 20mm to the back, it ain't happening (the current space is already occupied by the pocketpc stuff.)

just so you know, as the amount of ram increases so does the power consumption.

Looks like this isn't the only thread about potential new devices!

There seems to be some buzz about this origami thing:

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...hlight=origami

(Man, I hope copy and paste works with thread titles...)

Thing is, none of us lowly user types really knows what is going to be released.

It sounds to me like we have room for 2 or 3 more categories of devices. I don't think ANY of them could achieve the run-away sales success of the ipod, since so many people already have those, and people who want an ipod are going to buy an ipod, not one of these things. Plus, there are too many different competing devices coming out at once for any one of them to get enough sales to be the next ipod.

But, it's intriguing anyway. I think the more "mashup" devices get built, the better, so people can try out stuff and contribute to the evolution of the technology.

I just wish more normal user type people like us, who don't work in the industry, and don't live near the product development or marketing offices of one of these companies, could be involved in the product testing.

Anyway, the initial post in this thread mentioned a big hard drive and it sounds like the DualCor device would have that, but it looks bigger than an Axim or ipod.

So we are living in pretty exciting times!

I predict the next big thing will be having voice interface throughout your house and maybe anywhere you have wifi, cellular, or other radio signal, so you can pretend you are on the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Maybe you will even be able to pick up a "fully functional" Data at Best Buy. I could really use that, especially if he is proficient at vacuuming the house.

What about a 40 GB HD with its own rechargable power that can be plugged into the SD cardslot? I realize its not an evolution but it can give current Axim owners expandablity and that wouldn't be a bad thing. I already carry a bag of accessories what is one more thing to carry - so long as it fits in my coat pocket.
