I've always thought my x30 seemed really slow. I tried using Dell's switcher bar and spb's software to actually end programs from memory, but everything seemed too slow. Then yesterday I got this wild idea to leave programs open instead of closing them. I'm not a multimedia user, so about 80 - 90% of what I use my pda for is reading email, looking up phone numbers in contacts, and keeping track with tasks, calendar, and notes. I also use avantgo a few times a week. So I opened up all of these. I also use aol and msn a bit, but adding more than 4-5 programs will complicate myself when I use the alt-tab feature from spb, so I chose to keep them closed. So far everything runs a lot faster. In fact everything opens instantaneously (when I use the 4 physical buttons below the display). I might even decide to keep activesync open after syncs, seeing that it doesn't show up in spb's alt-tab feature.
Well, I guess I am a lot happier now. Before I though my axim x30 mid was really slow, but I guess if I use Microsoft's intended procedure of minimizing programs instead of closing them, I will be able to access programs faster. Now I just need a few more physical buttons :approve:
Note, I am almost certain that if you play games and use multimedia programs such as wmp, it's best to close these when you're done as these probably take up a lot of system resources. But if you're not a power user, and use it mostly as a planner like me, you might be able to do things faster this way.
I think you've raised some valid points. :) IMHO, one of the main problems is the fact that there is no indication that programs are still running. There would be far fewer complaints of devices locking up if users knew they still had so many apps running.
Hi guys, I'm a new user, just got my X30 high and Im really happy with it, other than these tasks.
How could I actually CLOSE these tasks, I'm having trouble running some high end programs due to memory drainage
There are a couple of ways to do this. You can use Dell's Switcher Bar program, which comes installed on the X30. You have to go into Systems - Settings to find it. My favorite though is Magic Button. It's free, and shows which applications are open by using icons at the top of your today screen. There are many other plug ins that do this with more style and functionality, but Magic Button fits my needs.
Sorry to hear about the bad news on your bday. I personally use Dell's Switcher Bar and I totally agreed with all of your points Gigi. It's absolutely ridiculous that there wasn't an easier way to terminate programs or even know what programs are running. That's one thing I forgot with the switcher bar, that it was not even built in to the original OS from Micro$oft.
Well, miscrosoft believes that if you keep all your programs open and you are an average user, that it would be more productive to be able to switch between these already-open tasks by leaving them open.
It's actually a good idea to be able to switch so fast between applications, and I haven't noticed any lag (before I got magic button)
one might try to adobt the original plan for the device
