Yes I have setup everything like that millions of times, AdHoc simply does not work, you must need a router

It can work but, as I have mentioned several times before, it's very difficult to troubleshoot and I've never found an effective series of checks that can consistently solve problems.

First thing you should do is disable power saving mode on wifi. If that doesn't do any good then I suggest you take a look at what channels are being broadcasted by others around you and choose one as far away from those channels as possible. I had a helluva time connecting a while back and I finally figured out that it was because a signal being broadcasted by a neighbor was interfering with my signal (eventhough the utilities said I had an excellent signal to mine) so I switched it from channel 1 to 11 and it works no problem now.

Just remember that channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only ones in the US that are truly seperate. The others (2-5, 7-10) have overlap.
