Answer to WPA-PSK for X3i (WM2003 not SE)
I saw quite a few postings asking about this (because I was searching for the answer myself) and I wanted to say that YES (!) you can use your Axim X3i with WM2003 (without SE) to connnect to networks with WPA encryption.
NOTE: I forgot to add this previously, but I had upgraded the ROM to A02 (you can check un System Information) and possibly patched it with a few patches all of which is available on the Dell site. I suggest you go do that first before trying the software listed below. Believe me, the two programs I listed below definitely can work on an X3i for WPA-PSK since I've used both on my home network.
Here's what you can use:
1) Odyssey Access Client (used to be Funk, now owned by Juniper)
From other postings, I think it's fairly well known that Odyssey Access Client works for this. Go download the latest version (4.5 at the time of this posting) from the Juniper website <http://www.juniper.net/customers/support/products/aaa_802/oac_client_user.jsp> since it's not included with your pda (unlike X30 and up).
Pros: Works beautifully! Quite easy to use and learn and is very fast to connect
Cons: Costs money. I think it was arond $50. There's a 30 day free trial.
Additional Notes: I tried v.4.06 as well but this did NOT work on my X3i
2) Aegis Client (used to be Meetinghouse, now owned by Cisco)
This client isn't well known and I had never seen any reference to it on aximsite for this purpose. But surprisingly, it works! Unfortunately, it appears that after Cisco bought out Meetinghouse the application disappeared and cannot be downloaded anymore (I think it used to be free to download). However, I did find one site with a download and instructions on setup here <http://wireless.uhmc.sunysb.edu/instructions-windowsmobile.htm>
Pros: It works and seems to be quite powerful in terms of the encryptions it supports (WPA, PEAP and such)
Cons: The source is a bit sketchy (seems like it's a hospital distributing it freely -- rightly or wrongly?). The interface is also more complicated to learn and operate and connection is sometimes slow. The site gives pretty good instructions on it though.
Other things I tried and DIDN'T work:
- previous versions of Odyssey Access Client (4.06, and maybe 3.03)
- Hitchhiker (0.32 and 0.4b1) -- although this application can do WPA and WEP, it didn't seem to work for WPA on the X3i. However, gui was beautiful and intuitive, so I recommend it for later versions of WM.
- SocketCom WiFi Companion
