ah-ha!
ok, I got it working now.
The problem was, my router was in g mode with backwards compatibility for b mode like I thought, but I was reading about routers online and I found out about 54g LRS. My router was trying to run my b mode at an accelerated rate (22mbps) as well as my g rate (108mbps). Most b devices work fine like this and actually operate a little faster than they normally would. However, some b device won't work at all. 54G LRS mode slows my accelerated dual connection router back down to the standard 11mbps. I turned back on WEP 128-bit (to avoid the wpa passphrase craziness) and it works great. I get excellent signal on both my PC and x30 in my basement when my router is on the second floor of my house with my belkin g+ router. Not bad. Not bad at all:) .
I hope my little fiasco will help someone else solve their x30 wireless issues.
Thanks for helping me think outside the box, Box.
