My X30 seems to do a factory reset after a period of non-use

I never use my x30, it sits in a drawer and has for years because I have this annoying issue with it. I can charge the thing, install lots of stuff, configure it how i want and If I don't use it for a few weeks and try to turn it on after a charge, it will act like I did a factory reset on it. It starts displaying all of the various screens that you get when you first buy the thing like Alignment test where you hit the crosshairs at different points, Stylus info, pop-up menus, set time zone, and wireless info. Then after that I lost everything I did to configure/customize it. Is this common, or just a problem with me and if so anyone know how I can "fix" the problem? It seems maybe the only way I can resolve it is to keep it charged 24/7. I also have not run any recent updates from dell on it, think that would help?

Thanks

hello,

if i'm right, your using wm2002/2003, and when the batteries go dead with those platforms it's the equivalent to a hard reset. The backup battery is only good for 30 minutes or so.there is no way to stop this, you just have to keep it charged. If you upgrade to a wm5 device then you won't have this problem because unlike your current os that stores all your info in the ram, wm5 handles memory differently, storing all your info in rom memory and so you don't lose it wen the battery dies.

i'm 99% sure i'm pointing you in the right direction, and i'm 100% sure that if i'm not then the more knowledgeable people here will correct me!. you've come to the right place, it's a great site!

Sprite backup has an option to perform an automatic backup when the battery drops below a chosen level (say 20 percent)

All you need to do then is recharge, reset the clock and restore the file...

First of all....allowing your battery to go flat over and over again will shorten the life of your battery.

All older pocket pcs that run Windows Mobile 2003 or an earlier operating system maintain all user files, settings and installed applications in RAM. Battery life is used to maintain this data. When the battery goes flat, all this data is permanently lost. Backing up your data to a storage card, as psionandy recommended, will prevent you from having to manually set everything up from scratch every time you let the battery go flat.

But to avoid a damaged battery and loss of data, you should plug the pocket pc into AC power whenever you are not using it. You do not need to worry about overcharging the battery since the circuitry in LION batteries that are used in Pocket PCs shut off the charging mechanism when the battery is fully charged. You also don't need to worry about messing up the "memory" of the battery since LION batteries have no memory.
