I got my hands on two X30's today, but I'm having a ton of problems.
Might need to reinstall Windows Mobile?
I got two X30's and a charge for $5. But, I didn't get any disks.
When I start it up I get the following error:
Tour Error
(System) Could not load remote XML file: [183]
The main thing it's stuck at is a screen that either says "charging..." (orange) or "ready." (green), with something that looks like a wireless logo. The bottom left has
Version 1.5.6
Dell Axim X30
Untagged
The bottom right has battery info.
I manage to get things to show up, even got one of them to use the net, so they're not bricked or anything.
However, there's no Start menu constantly on the screen, I have to hit any one of the four round buttons then the button in the middle to bring up the start menu. I guess the start menu is supposed to be at the top of the screen, but like when windows on a regular pc starts to crash, all that's there is whatever was last on the screen. Right now after opening it, I just see Today and part of ActiveSync. The windows all seem to be doing the same thing, as where when I try to get rid of something it just won't go away, and things keep stacking.
I've tried a hard reset, I just get errors. It's kind of odd how both can have the exact same problem, but that's what it seems like to me.
I've tried googling for hours, haven't found anything. I'm not even sure if I can buy windows mobile seperately because I haven't found that either.
Anyone got any ideas? If the windows installs are just completely corrupt, I wouldn't have a problem using linux or something else.
I've never had a Pocket PC before so I'm not really sure what other types of info you'd need, but if anything else is needed just let me know.
It does the whole reset thing, makes me click the middle/top/bottom to align the screen, teaches me how to cut and paste, makes me choose my time zone, then loads up windows. I can see the start menu and all of that for a couple seconds, then it goes to install certain things. I think when it goes to install macromedia flash, it gives an error about it might have errors because it was made for a previous version. Then, after that, regardless of whether or not I cancel the flash install, it reboots and then ends up back at the dumb screen with the wireless-type icon, with no start menu where I have to hold a round button and press the middle button to get the start menu.
Probably shoulda mentioned all that earlier and added on to the pile of confusion.
Do you have an SD card in them when you Hard Reset?
Once it shows the today screen, it should stop and wait for you to do something with it.
If it is trying to install something else, something very strange is happening.
I can get to the today screen when I select it from the invisible start menu, but again all the windows just pile up on top of each other. I managed to bring it up and get rid of it now by tapping near the top of the screen though, taking me back to the "ready." screen.
Do you know what I'm talking about with this "ready." screen? With the version etc. What does Untagged mean? Is that anything important?
I've searched that site, they don't seem too X30 friendly. I think I read that they just cater to phones. Should I just post it in their general forum and hope for the best?
Why aren't my posts showing up? Let's try this again...
Do you mean forum (dot) xda-developers (dot) com? [Post wasn't posting when I linked that for some reason]. If so, I searched there and they didn't seem too friendly to the X30. I read they're only for phones. Should I just post in their general forum and hope for the best?
Your posts won't work with links until you have more than ten post here, it's a spam filter.
Try searching there as much as you can, they aren't that good at answering questions that have already been asked, if you know what I mean.
But there is a hell of a lot of useful information, it's just a matter of finding it.
Meanwhile, someone else here might be able to give you more help than me.
Please be a bit patient, we try our best.
I'll post there too and keep this thread updated with what they've told me.
As far as being patient, no worries there. I was expecting either nothing or having to wait at least a few days for a reply. I mean, I really wanna get these things working so I have more buttons to press, but I have absolutely no necessary use for them so it's no rush.
Update: I think that tour error might be the cause of it. I was going through random folders just trying to delete things, and I came across that and I think deleted something for it and I got the start menu back. I still got that error, so I don't think it's 100% fixed. If I gotta just delete some stupid file every time that'd be better than nothing.
I took the old fashioned route, just deleted all sorts of files at random and did a bunch of hard resets. I got start menus, internet, everything. Seems to be working great. I'm not getting my hopes up yet though, but I made progress.
But now that I think about it, I think the X30's have a section of memory (BIS?) that is unaffected by a hard reset. Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge of the x30 series could jump in here and straighten me out.
It's been a long time since I used an X30, and I'm much more familiar with wm5 and wm6.
If that is the case, you may just need to clear out everything from there and you will be back to new.
It really sounds like there are unwanted programs reinstalling after the hard reset.
Yeah I think deleting everything I could possibly find did the trick, especially that tour thing. Although I'm not quite sure if I'm shutting them off fully, unless they're supposed to boot literally as soon as you hit the power button? I mean I've tried removing the battery and waiting a bit and they still just boot right up at an unbelievable speed. I guess if they're really shut down and it's really starting back up, then they're fixed. I don't see any shut down options or anything in the start menu, or anywhere, so I'm guessing that's just how it works.
I'm guessing the problem's solved though. I wish pc's booted this fast, it's insane.
So, in short, how I fixed them:
Step 1.) Delete all sorts of crap
Step 2.) Hard reset
Don't ya love when it's simple like this? I wish every problem could be solved like this, I call it the "bang on pipes with wrench" tactic.
Glad to hear you got it working. Anything prior to WM5 will boot immediately, so you should not use that as a sign that it hasn't been shut down or hard reset.
