Where in memory do I store programs? Also Outlook problem.
where in memory should I install my programs, for example; Resco Photo Viewer, Resco Explorer, TCPMP? I know that music, pics and other programs that don't need to occupy room in the PPC Main and Storage Memory can be stored in a card . I get confused with Main Memory and Storage Memory. I have been installing programs in Storage Memory. I placed the VBAR program in Main Memory. I placed Resco Explorer and others in Storage Memory, should I have put them in Main Memory? I am truly confused Please help and thanks in advance.
Rosa
PS: I am able to receive emails via outlook but can't sent, any ideas? I tried FlexMail and had the same problem. I don't sync for email (I only sync to install programs, etc) but, I like to be able to receive and sent from PPC when necessary. Thanks a bunch.

Reason: spelling
1)Main memory (Many programs work just fine from storage cards).
2) Check to see if your outgoing server requires authentication. Many ISP's do, and this can drive you nuts if you don't know about it since you can receive but not send. It's just a few changes on the email setup on your PPC. This is primarily a spam prevention attempt by ISP's where it checks to make sur you have a valid account. Just go ahead and make the changes and see if it works. Might take a bit of tweaking but you won't hurt anything.

Hello Bob :) Thanks for your quick response. I know that I can run programs from SD storage cards, but I am confused about Main Memory and Built-In Storage in my x30. I believe it is different from Storage Card memory, am I correct? Perhaps, I am confused and both Main Memory and Built-In storage is the same thing. What kind of necessary programs can I run from a storage card? Thanks a bunch.
One thing I can tell you, is that apparently any programs for your today screen (plugins, etc) should not be installed in the Built in Storage. I installed the Launcher program and it did not work installed in the Built in Storage. It worked in the main memory.

Pocket pcs with 2003se and lower manage memory much differently than computers do. PPCs use ram for installing programs and the ram is also used to run programs just like it is on computers. RAM is quicker easier to read memory than rom. The problem arises when you use too much of the ram for installing programs, leaving not enough memory to run the programs, slowing your device to a halt.
Built in Storage (BIS) is the ROM memory left over from the system files. Many system files on your axim cant be deleted b/c they are in the rom. But, the chunk of rom left over is yours to use. Its almost as good as a memory card, the only disadvantage is that it cant be removed like a card can.
The solution to having enough ram is to install programs to removable memory such as a sd card. Make sure to install only programs that arent loaded on startup, such as today screen plugins (weather programs, reminder progs, etc). The majority of programs can be installed onto a memory card just fine, and will run just as fast, if not faster due to the freed up ram.
To install programs onto the memory card, when Activesync pops up the message box "Install program to main memory" select no and then you can select your memory card. Or if you use cab files, get Cabinstl which lets you choose where to install.
Hope that helps...

"Cabinstl" eh.... I need this app, where can I grab it? I get really annoyed when cab files don't install the app where I want it.
Repo, just go here and you can read about it...http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/utilities/102120-cabinstl.html it's right here on mobility site. You can go a google search on cabinstl - choose Freeware PPC.com (FreewarePPC.com - Freeware Pocket PC / Freeware Windows Mobile: CabInstl v1.04) and download CabInstl v1.04. Once you unzip place the cabintal_en into your Built-in-storage or an SD card. I don't know if I am allowed to give you links to where I downloaded my cabinstal from, let me know if I am not suppose to do this.

Spunker, thank you so very much for all this info. It helped me understand. :)
This is what I have in my X30H Programs in storage memory:
1. MpegTV Pocket TV
2. Resco Photo Viewer
3. TCPMP The Core Pocket Media PlayerMain
Memory: (RAM)
PROGRAM FILES
1. Resco Explore
2. vBAR
This is what I understand:
Main Memory=Ram/Program Memory (better not to use because it will slow up PPC)
BIS=ROM (use this and storage card instead of Main Memory/Program Memory
Does this sound about right to you? Can you please explain what "Adjust MEMORY allocation" means?
I placed the cabinstal in my Built-in-storage, but I really don't understand what it is for? Again, thank you so much. :approve:

Repo, I installed vBar and Resco Explorer in my main memory and it works great from there, never thought of putting it anywhere else. But now I know from Spunker to be really cheap about using my Main Memory :)
yeah I have most of them installed in the Built in Storage, except my Launcher app, cause it uses the today screen. I tend to keep the programs down to a minimum. Novii Remote is where it's at!

There is a very useful, although very seldom used, tool on the internet, it's called google and by typing "novii remote" into it I was taken to this site.

Very funny :) actually I realized that and did a google right away and found it. I'll just keep my remote.
It gets fun to use when you install a codebase for your buddy's TV, and start clicking buttons, and he starts wondering how the hell his TV is acting up.
