small memory

Is it normal for the axim to save downloads in main memory when I clearly chose my 2 gig SD card for the receiving file??? I have a relatively big update I'm downloading for my PC (which I will install later) but I got a "your memory is critically low" warning. I also noticed that the downloaded file was being saved in my main memory!

I hope there is a way to bypass saving the file in the main memory and just have it written to the SD card. Thanks guys!

p.s. I'm using Opera 8.65 btw.

Yes, Main Memory is default. If you are using Opera to download, check the settings to see if you can change the default.

The problem I think is my download is being written to the storage, HOWEVER, it's also being mirrored in my main memory cache. I searched and found this advice but don't know if it will work.

This may help: Moving Opera Cache to storage card:

"to move the cache to the storage card...
-Close Opera.
-Create a folder on your storage card where the cache files will go.* I chose \Storage Card\Program Files\Opera\cache4, but I don't think the folder structure or folder name matter.
-Open \Application Data\Opera\opera.ini in a text editor.
-In the [User Prefs] section, add the following line: Cache Directory4=[full path to folder on storage card].
-Save and close opera.ini.
-Restart Opera. Your cache is now being written to your storage card."

I'm going to try it out tonight. If it does work...

:)

Anyone have any thoughts or advice on this???

Update:

The little tweak I made (with much trepidation) WORKED!

I can now no longer worry about cache being fed to my Axims meager 63 Mb of RAM :) I downloaded an update that was 57.6 Mb last night and watched the system memory maintain the same level.

Just thought I'd share that one with you guys. This pretty much has me wondering if I could use this advice to turn my SD into "hard drive."

Cheers :)

If you add Card Export to your Ax, then you can use it as a card reader instead of using Active sync.

It's not as fast as a true card reader but it is faster than active sync and you don't need to install anything on the PC that you want to connect to.
Therefore allowing you to use your Ax as a card reader with anyone's PC.

Softick is offering Card Export for $9.95 for the holiday season. Thanks to Box, I gave the trial version a run, and now just got it.
