Cool some specs

By Ed Hardy | Editor-in-Chief
September 25th, 2003
At a press conference today, Michael Dell introduced some members of the Axim line of Pocket PCs, one of which will include built-in Wi-Fi. Details are still somewhat sketchy but a fuller picture of these models is becoming available

Dell itself said very little about these devices. It released a number of pictures and put out a press release that says only, "The Dell Axim X3, Dell's newest handheld, is a thinner, lighter companion to the popular Dell Axim X5. The X3 features optional integrated 802.11b wireless connectivity in a clean, sophisticated design.

Dell says these are expected to be available before the holiday shipping season.

Update: The FCC has given Dell approval to release these handhelds in the US, bringing to light new information about these devices. Read more in this Brighthand article.

Rumored Information
Without revealing its source, BargainPDA.com is saying that the Axim X3 series will include three models. All of them will use the same general design, run Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, and include an SD/MMC slot that offers SDIO support.

One model will have a 300 MHz processor, the second will have a 400 MHz processor and 64 MB of RAM, while a third will have a 400 MHz processor, 64 MB of RAM, and Wi-Fi.

Pricing for all three models has not yet been announced, but the Wi-Fi-enabled one will sell for $400.

These upcoming members of the Axim line will face competition from a variety of handhelds. For example, HP is rumored to be close to releasing the iPAQ h4155, a light and slim model that offers both Wi-Fi. And quite a few multimedia-capable handhelds that cost around $200 are expected to be available soon.

Axim X3 Specs from X3 User Guide on bargainpda.com

Of course this is still only rumor until someone actually has an X3 in their sweet little hands, but bargainpda.com has the Dell Axim X3 User Guide from Dell's submission of the X3 to the FCC. There are pictures of the internals and externals of the X3. They also have the link to the FCC website where you can download the entire user manual. Here is the link to the bargainpda website

http://www.bargainpda.com/default.as...wComments=true

This user guide might not be the one that is finally released with the X3, but if it is an early draft or an elaborate hoax, it sure looks complete and authentic to me. My wife is interested in purchasing the X3 for herself, she likes the form factor. I still like the flexibility of the X5, but this information is complete enough to help decide what purchase to make if you're considering between the two.

X3 Specs:

Processor: Intel XScale at 400 MHz or 300MHz
Memory: RAM - 64 or 32 MB SDRAM ROM - 48 or 32 MB Intel StrataFlash ROM

Screen: QVGA Color 16-bit, touch sensitive display
Display Size: 3.5 inches
Resolution: 240 x 320 at 65,536 colors
Expansion Slots: one Secure Digital slot (3.3v)
Ports and Connectors: Infrared, Power, 26-pin Cradle/Synch connector
Dimensions: 3.0 in x 3.21 in x 0.58 in (l x w x h)
Weight: 138 g (0.30 lb) with standard battery
Audio Controller: AC-97 Codec chip: WM9706 sound chip
Battery type: Main 950-mAh Lithium-ion removable, rechargeable and 1800-mAh Lithium-ion removable, rechargeable optional
Stereo Conversion: 16-bit stereo
Wireless: 802.11b

Are these straight from the manual right? Because when I saw the manual, I figured that it is very unlikely for it to be so squared, I mean, how is it possible that it is 3 x 3.21 inches, there must be something wrong in there, I think also that the conversions to millimiters is not right.

I would say that three could be a 5 in instead, and maybe the guy who wrote the manual was a little blind.
