The Axim X3's speed and great display make it a good choice for gaming.
The D-Pad is not very good for gaming though and I found the D-pad on the X5 better for playing games. The X5 d-pad is smoother to use (good for games) while the X3 d-pad is hard and feels more like a normal button (good for applications).

the speaker is on the back in my opinion for using the mic effectivly...if you think about it, you really wan the speaker as far away as possile from the mic so you dont get an echo effect when using VOIP software for example.

I was playing mario3 for pocketNES on my x3i.. the speed is very good... perfect emulation.. however the controls totally killed the experience... the D-pad has ridges that make it really hard to make quick movements and the middle button is wayy to big. The side hardware buttons are hard to puch and inset too much.... its extremely hard to press two buttons at once wo make mario run and jump at the same time.... also the d-pad made my thumb cramp after about 10 minutes of play...

the controls on my ipaq 4155 are alot better but still pretty mediocre. the d-pad is easier to use and the buttons arnt as inset as much as the x3...

the asus a620 takes the cake though... the dpad and buttons feel just as good as playing on a gameboy

Speaker is not that big of a problem, processing and speed isn't either. The screen is plenty big IMO, however the D-pad is what really is lacking when it comes to games . . .

The D-Pad takes a little getting used to. It felt very awkward when I started playing Mario on it, but I'm pretty much used to it now (except the jump won't register sometimes in Mario 3, which is annoying, but I think it's the game because it works fine in others). The speaker on the back is a weird deal, but it's not too bad because it's nice and loud. Unfortunately, with some games, background music is crackly and I'm not sure why. I have lots of fun with my Axim in my free time. If you want a PDA dedicated to gaming, give the Tapwave Zodiac a go. It looks damn fine. http://www.tapwave.com/
