Question X3 good for games?

What do you fellow gamers think about the X3's potential as a good gaming platform (mostly in comparison with the current X5)? Here are my thoughts...

1) Hate the positioning of the speaker! Why in the world would they stick it in the back? Turn your Ax over and see what I mean. Your hand is going to cover it!

2) What's up with the rectangular D-pad? While I must admit I haven't tried a rectangular D-pad, I don't see that it would be very nice for gaming. The buttons also lie in the same linear plane instead of being staggered (I see problems with this too but could be wrong.)

3) Why not give us a bigger 3.7 screen? I drool when I see the size of the screens on the higher-end Ipaqs. Oh well, wishful thinking...

4) Is it just me or is the standard battery not as good as the battery on the X5? According to the specs ours is 1440 amps or whatever and the X3 batteries are only 950 amps (or whatever unit of measurement). What's the deal?

Maybe I'm dead wrong. Maybe the new X3 will be just great for gaming, but I remain skeptical.

1. I thought the same thing about the speaker, why the hell would they stick it on the back, if you put the axim on a desk or somethin and want to listen to some music, you wont be able to, unless you use headphones.
2. rectangular D-pad is allright, the buttons should be a little higher up thou
3. The bigger screen is not much of an issue, but it would be nice
4. The battery is definetly weaker, but x3 has a new CPU (pxa 26X or so i hear). Thats why im going to stick with my X5 until something better comes up.

Another thing i dont like is the missing CF slot, but its a tradeoff, since X3 has the built-in wireless.

My prognosis, or is it diagnosis, whichever, it should be just as good for gaming as X5, but the battery might be a little weak, especially with Wi-Fi.

I actually think it may be a bit better for gaming because the new D-PAD design looks like it is similar to the Palm Tungsten D-PAD design (with the separate center button, and much crisper tactile response). So I think that the feel of the buttons on the X3 should be much better and more precise. As far as the positioning of the buttons, they may be a bit too close together, but time will tell if that proves to be an issue.

everyone is complaining about the back speaker.. but maybee the engineers/designers see something that make the design slimmer. All the ipaqs are like that too, my thought is with the speaker by the buttons it crowds things up and maybee they see room for the back

I've used a 2210 and the back speaker doesn't really bother me much. Yeah, if you happen to cover it with your hand, the sound may be muddled a bit. But at the same time, let's keep in mind that most PDA speakers are far from hi-fi. I find that it's not really a big deal and that the sounds that matter are still quite audible.

If you're going to be listening to music, or doing something which requires the maximum level of sound quality possible, it will probably be through headphones anyway.

I would disagree. Flip your axim over and cover it with a finger and see how well you can hear sound. Granted I'm not going to bother to listen to my Dave Matthews Band through the little thing but for when I'm playing a quick game without headphones...or when my axim is in my pants with the speaker pressed against my thigh...might miss some alarms...

Once again, Unless you have toddler hands, trust me. It placed in a perfect spot that does not get cupped by holding it.

That sounds like the voice of experience.

Chris, have you been holding out on us? Have you been playing with an X3 these past few days?

:D ;) :hide:

If you notice, he's been around since April.....much longer than the X3 has been around. Hence, he probably has owned an X5 before. :)
