Anyone working on a patch to shut off the blue light?

As I await the delivery of my X3i, I'd like to know the progress of such a program.

I agree, I am thinking that enough
people have already complained and
dell will release a patch eventually...
but this is just speculation.... i have
not heard anything official..

My biggest concern, though, and a source of confusion, is how a software patch can solve a hardware-specific issue like this?

I mean, is it the system that is telling the light to flash with wifi activity, or is it some form of "in-line" light that is not controlled by software?

The PDAs I've used with an internal antenna have a much lower range than the X3i.

I think the designers must have reasoned that having something stick out of your PDA is going to seem rather odd to ordinary people unless it does something (like flash).

And dont forget if you go
"wooowooowooowooo"
(how do you imitate a siren in text?)
while walking down a hall w/ your flashing
blue light, people will stop to the right
and let you pass.....

I don't care if it blinks, flashes or what ever, as long as I know it works. Most tech-no Geeks like the flashing antennas and such.

try taping it over.

as for a flashing light, the netgear ma701 blinks to signal a connection. thing is, netgear was smart and made it blink only when there was a link present (either that or simply to show that the power was on) and then it would stop blinking (but stay on) when the connection was functional. dell should have done the same thing, takes care of everybody's problems....

other wifi cards besides the ma701 do have a flashing light, right?

My D-Link 650+ Card on my laptop has a green light... stays green (solid) when there is a connection (very subtle green light... just enough to notice), and no data is being transmitted or recieved.... and when there is activity, it blinks.

It only bothers me at night, typing something, and all the lights are off... sorta distracting, but being that the axim is much smaller, and the light is more in your face, it will soon annoy me im sure... mine will be covered within the first day.

I'm not so sure that this is one of those things that could be fixed using a software patch. Maybe if it were possible to do a firmware update of the Wifi subsystem in the X3 you could get it to stop. Otherwise I would think this is something that is hardwired to the Wifi system in the X3 and turning it off may not be possible without physically disconnecting it.

It's sort of like if someone asked you to turn off your hard disk activity light on your desktop. I don't think that desktops have any hooks into the bios to allow this to be done via software. The only way to go would be to pop the case open and disconnect the light. Maybe PPC Techs could start offering an "X3 Blue light deactivation" service to go along with thier memory upgrades.

Here is how I "fixed" mine not to blink. Make sure you are not on carpet so the screws don't fall into the carpet and get lost (do it on flat concrete or something). Turn the pda so that you can look directly at the connector on the bottom. Drop that sucker!

i agree with the non software controled theory, most network adapters on pcs have a light that is part of the card and the network line, its automatic not software controled

LOL. Now you've got more things to fix.

If HP can make a hidden antenna in its 4150, why not dell? Plus the wifi range of 4150 is rumored to be better than dell. that antenna on X3i doesn't look techno or cool at all. it's childish at most.

And look at the price of a 4150 compared to a X3i....

I'm not bitching, If it annoys me, I'll get it "fixed" :)
