getting connected wirelessly

hi - I've asked before and I'm asking again...what's the easiest way to get the wireless to connect? I've read reviews on the x3i and all say how easy it is...just turn it on and you're set...I followed some instructions that someone else left on another thread but apparently I keyed in the wrong IP address because my desktop gets an error that there is more than one computer trying to access at the same time. Is there any easy way? I've not called Dell yet as I'm trying to figure this out on my own (and don't want to be on the phone forever). I have a d-link wireless broadband router that connects my laptop no problem with the same type of wireless card as the x3i. Any help is greatly appreciated!
thanks!:rolling:

Don't feel bad, I have not been able to get my wi-fi to work for months. Not ever in fact. I have read all the links and help on this site and more. I'm no expert, but I have a good basic working knowledge of computers. I have 3 desktops running xp pro and 1 notebook running xp pro. So here it is, can anyone give people like bcurrado any hope and advice. When he says "is there a easier way" I can hear myself screaming there has to be a easier way!

I know there's got to be an easier way because the reviews claim the axim just seeks out the signal and away they go!
Thanks.

bcurrado,
I'm not the expert but my wireless conection on X3 is working...
So, what are router's setting? Do you broadcast the signal?
Do you have WAP? Do you have MAC filltering?
The easiest way (as far as I know :)) is to broadcast your
signal, do not use WAP and use MAC filltering. In your router's
setting use X3 MAC#. Go to wireless setting on your X3, switch
on wireless conection :-), and X3 should see your router and
SSID of your network. Check 'ping' command with your router
and other computers, set that this network connects you to the
Internet and you should be able to visit www.aximsite.com...

Let us know how this works for you!
Good luck

Ok I'm pretty new with PPCs but I'll try to tell my experiences with X3i.

I've never tried ad-hoc connections so maybe my experience is only for Access Points.

First when I got my X3i playing with it I switched on wireless and I went to settings-conections-wireless ethernet there was a tick box on the screen "Automatically connect to non preferred Network" (I can't remember if this was ticked by default) and tick the box.

First of all my access point broadcasts SSID (no way to switch it off) when I switched on the wireless on the X3 it automatically detected my access point and noticifation pops up on the screen.

Tapped connect and a window popped up asking for WEP key. At this point i had to and configure a new WEP on the access point to get this information.

When all setup back to the X3 start wireless again.
Settings-Connections-Wireless Ethernet... SSID of my wireless network on screen...
Tap on the name
Select This connects to the internet
Tap "Authentication"
Enter WEP settings (same as wireless access point)

Now my X3i working on the internet. Connection a bit ropey though. Fixed by
Settings-Connections-Dell WLAN Utility
Tap advanced Tab and disable power saving.

X3i now working flawlessly.

Now this is how I got my X3 to connect to the wireless network there could be some differences in your network.

1. My broadband router acts as DHCP server. Maybe you could have to assign a fixed IP and DNS servers for your X3.

2. If your access point does not broadcast SSID on the wireless ethernet settion of connection tap on "Add new setting and manually enter the SSID and WEP settings.

Hope this helps

I had to set the WEP again on the access point. Somewhere on the configuration of your access point you probably have an option to generate a key using a easily remembered password.

This generates a 26 character hexidecimal code you will see this when you generate the code. Write it down (if my access point is typical you cannot recover this code later).

Then on your X3 go to settings-connections-wireless ethernet
Tap on the SSID of your wireless network and tap the authentication tab.
tick the box "WEP enabled" and enter the characters in the network key.

Finally tap ok, disable and then enable the wireless. All should be tickity boo.
