The above post has the right idea. When I was working w/ a similar setup, it was a pain until I figured it out.
What is puzzling, however, is that your notebook works through this setup (going through your desktop) just fine. Is that correct?

yes it is, the lap top seemed to connect without a problem. I can also connect through my pda but very seldom does this actually work.
I am just fiddling with the settings and removed the bridge and just tried to connect my pda to my pc on an ad-hoc network before sorting out the internet connection share.
I am assuming that once I establish a good wifi network between the two I will get an IP on my axim different to a 169.xxx one.
However when I try to use the windows xp repair funtion( the old ipconfig/release then renew, i presume) it has an error in trying to associate an ip.
As far as I know these network setups should work fine side by side, any ideas how to make sure my tcpip is setup correctly on the wifi setting?
Sorry for all the questions!!!
ps ignore the rubbish i mentioned about the print server on the router, not enabled and not being used, just thought I would try and give as much info as poss

Since the laptop connects with out a problem, that does indeed seem to point back to the PDA.

That is how I would do it. I would tryto connect many times with different variables to make sure the problem is not at that step.

Yes, for this purpose, it all begins with a usable IP aquisition. If you do not have that, the process is dead in the water.

That seems to point to a problem between the desktop and the router. I am not sure if XP will pass a usable IP to the PDA if it can not get one for itself from the router.

hmm, my pc has a valid IP with the router, a 192 one and I am able to define it a static one on the router to stop things getting confused, something is making the pc not talk to the axim correctly, but I have no idea what it could be.

Was it this thread or another where they were posting about the X3i getting "stuck" on channel 5? If so, maybe that is why. Pehaps it does not cycle to the channel the desktop WiFi NIC is on?
(Doing other things while posting, too busy to check)
If it was not in this thread, I will look for it.

Also, what about eliminating firewalls on the PC just until you get an IP each and every time you try with the PDA?

Success, of sorts!
Your thoughts JmE about the stuck channel made some sense as I remembered I have never seen my ax on anything but 10. So, changing my nic to use only channel 10 and then re-creating the bridge has provided success, I can active sync and browse now!!!
Thanks for the hints.
However now I need to work out why it is stuck on channel 10 as this isnt the most useful thing if roaming to ap's now and then!(Do I contact Dell?)
Thanks again all contributors esp JmE for the breakthrough reply!

But I'm still able to roam from one AP to the next without dropping a connection. FYI, this is at both school and work for me. At both places, there are a combination of Cisco Aironet 1200 + 1100 APs on the same SSID using channels 1, 6, and 11.

Is this with WEP enabled as well?

Yes, WEP is enabled at work but not at school. Works for me in both situations.

Whoops, hit enter before I finished. Anyhow, for example at my office, my X3i can see 6 APs. 2 at channel 1, 2 at channel 6, and 2 at channel 11. All on the same SSID with WEP enabled. One of the channel 6 stations always sends the strongest signal (95-99%) while the other is usually around 50% signal. The signals from the other APs range in strength from 40-75%. My X3i will always associate with the strongest channel 6 station when powered on and looking to associate. If I happen to walk around the building with the X3i on, it will tend to latch onto the original AP until signal drops to about 30% before its handed off to the next AP.

I have both X5;X3i I was having trouble with the x-5 connecting when the wifi card was removed. I've been having to use theSW to scan and then the connecton would activate. My problem was solved when I removed all but one profile. You collect them automatically as you wander.
The X3i just needs to turn thewifi off and on works great.
I am using a cable moden with a router supplied by the cable comp. Works great.
I am trying to sync with both my LT and DT Outlook so as to share info with all four units. Anyone have a software answer to this situation???

Mine works great - just tested it out. Went to a campus with like 5 different access points overlapping with the same SSID. Always connected to the nearest and strongest signal.
