USB charging?
I have my Axim X3i in the cradel right now, with the power plug removed, and the axim off. When I did this intialy the charger light went out. I turned the axim on and off, then put it in the cradle, and made sure it was off. Now the amber charging light is on. Does the Axim cradle do USB charging, and I didn't know it?

Just tried this.... played around with the X3 for a bit - charged down from 100% to 96%... put it on the cradle without the power supply attached, switched it OFF, the charging light came on on the power button, and it charged back up to 99%... the only issue with that is it keeps switching itself on every so often when on the cradle - and it only charges when the PDA is switched off... anyone know how to stop it turning itself on?

Then what is the AC adaptor for?

To charge the axim when your pc is not turned on would be my guess.

You can't charge using this method if you want to switch the PDA on while it's charging, and I expect it'd take a lonnnnnnnnnng time to charge fully using the USB port due to the power the USB port can provide (see above in this thread).
So... the AC adaptor is for charging the battery quickly and allowing you to use the PDA at the same time the battery is charging....
Whether it'd be possible to make a USB cable that charged and could sync and work at the same time, I don't know - it may well be.

Maybe, but the USB power supply is so minimal, liek 500ma or something.
It is cool to know it does charge though.

500mA is indeed the most a USB device can draw within the USB specification I believe.

"Whether it'd be possible to make a USB cable that charged and could sync and work at the same time, I don't know - it may well be."
The problem is, I think that 500ma is so low, and that the without AC, USB doesn't have enough power to charge while the unit is on, so that while you can synch, or charge, charging while synching, if it does in fact occur, would be at an exremely slow rate.

you can get sync and charge cables (i have one) but they are really weird, if your axim is less than about 60% charged they actually discharge the battery instead of charging it!
