Installing Software

I'm one of those unlucky few who still hasn't really grasped the difference between builtin storage and main memory. Technically I'm there. I just have a few implications to clear up. If I install a piece of software on say an SD card, is all of that softwares configuration stored there. Does anything get put into the permanent memory. If so....what happens when you do a hard reset. Does the software stay installed. Also, is the directory structure the same over all media. I'm very confused. Need some help here.
Thanx

Hmm As I understand it...

when you install on the Pocket PC it is very similar to your desktop OS. SOME files get put into windows (in main memory) and the most is stored where you indicate. If you do a hard reset the files on a SD card are still there but those files in windows are not and the application will have to be re-installed.

However, If you do a back up before the hard reset you can restore the programs in that way which is easier. (this backup method will not work if the problem existed before you did ythe backup - it will reinstall the problem)

So make sure you do a backup while everything is working!!!

Directory structure is the same in all areas. Built in storage is just some "left" over space not needed at this time for OS. Later if the OS grows this area may be needed for OS storage!

I'm still not sure I get it....I thought a hard reset resetted back to factory. Say I install a program and it messes up my PDA and say I didn't take a backup-not thatI'd do anything so stupid. Would a hard reset fix it ?

Yes, doing a hard reset should fix it. Be careful about doing a restore though. If you made a backup WHEN you were having a problem, the restore may restore the problem back.

Take a look at this tutorial for general reference about installing software.
