What is an Active SSID on the WLAN

On the WLAN utility i can see an active network that is unlocked here at my office but cannot connect to it. Anyone help?
At home I just engage the WIFI and it picks up my Linksys wireless router automatically with no problems, so I am afraid of playing around with the settings>

A possibility is that even though they evidently have WEP encryption (unlocked lock?) disabled, they still may have MAC addressing set up, so that unless your device/card's MAC address is on their router's trusted PC table, you won't be able to connect. I don't know if that is what is happening, but it's a possibility.

Thank you for the info. I did not realize this.
Will look into it with them and see if I can get on their trusted computers list.
