Has anyone noticed that mediaplayer hangs after a few mins?

This is with media encoder broadcasting a 320x240 stream.

I get hanging behavior randomly between 30 secs and 10 mins, and I think I read on this site about it having to do with WEP key usage or MAC filtering

Get this, after I post that I got it working, which I did a while ago, today I go to try and stream some video and it doesn't want to work! I don't know why, but WMP on my X3 doesn't seem to find the stream, I've sue the URL WME gives me as well as my PC's IP (which is what I always used) but it doesn't work now. Maybe it a temporary thing, I hope! I tried turing off my firewall, WEP is off but nothing.

I should say when it was working, it was working great.

For me WMP on my X3 says it can't find the server or connection, so it's like it's not realizing that my X3 is connected to the Net. I thought it was somehting in my WME settings but it's not. I een tried reseting my router and all that but it didn't help.

Thing is I didin't do a hard reset on mine. I tried doing a soft reset but that didn't help.

Maybe I'll try again today and if I'm lucky it will work.

Let me see if I can help here. I have been streaming from my desktop to my PPC over the internet now for a month and it has worked well. I am actually streaming a TV broadcast. I did notice something today that was a little strange for me. My routine before I leave home to go to work is to get on my desktop at home at start up WME with the streaming profile that I have created for it. It has worked flawlessly for a month until today. When I tried to pick up the stream, WMP could not find it!!! It worked fine just yesterday. I did some investigating by using VNC to get into my desktop computer at home. WME was still running and encoding. But I done something different today that I have never done before. When I started my stream this morning, I minimized WME. Sounds strange but I never done that before. Using VNC I clicked on WME on my task bar and it came up and was still encoding. I tried WMP again and it worked. I was able to get the stream. It sounds weird but just by minimizing WME made things stop working for me.

I have also noticed in the earlier thread that you have to use the IP address in the URL to get things working as opposed to using the desktop name. There is a simple explanation for this. WMP probably did not work because your PPC could not resolve the name to an IP. I don't remember seeing a mention of using a DNS name or having the desktop name in DNS (this won't be the case if the stream is across the internet). I also did not see mention of anything like Pocket Hosts. You could use Pocket Hosts to setup resolution on your PPC so that you could use the desktop name in the URL and it will resolve to an IP.

Well I got it working again. I ended up trying so many different things like reseting my router, reinstalling my router, going back to earlier restore points in XP, I eventually got it to work. I was then wise enough to make a restore point in XP right after i got it to work, which is good becaue I went a played with some of my settings and it wouldn't work again, so I just went back to the proper restore point and it's working again.

So my problem had somehting ot do with my settings some where, not the X3 or Windows Media Encoder.

What seems to be the problem, does WMP on PPC give some kind of error? I use the Internet Address and it works everytime and I'm behind a firewall. Are you for sure typing the right address? Don't forget you got to type http://xx.xx.xx.xxx:8080/ in PPC Windows Media Player and also, not trying to be smart here or anything but I have also heard of people forgetting to click on the START Encoding button. Would be happy to broadcast a clip to someone if you PM or email me just to see if it will work for you on the PPC side of things. I can always change my IP address so that's no problem.:)

So in the 'everything' you tried, did you follow these instructions ?
http://www.bigdsvideo.com/bigdsvideo...ides/id11.html
It's all pictures so should be easy to get right.

Then check your firewall allows you access to the PC (it will be acting as a server so your firewall needs to know to allow connections to the server PC frtom the Axim).

Few things to check : Are you seeing the encoder running ? You should see a preview and output panel like in the guide. Anything else and you may not have pressed 'start encoding' ;-)

Also - are you sure your TV card is detected ?

Unfortunately 'I've tried everything it doesn't work' isn't much help without saying *what* doesn't work and what does ;-)

Have a gud day - CHeers - Neil

This may be a dumb question but I was looking to stream a video via wifi to my x30h. If I could get a movie streaming to my x30h at 1 mbps would the quality of that video be too much for my pocket pc to handle? Or would the percieved quality at 1 mbps look the same as a 500 kbps movie? Even if I copy it to my sd size movie size is not a problem no matter from 250 mb to 1 gb or more doesn't matter. I'm interested in the best quality possible no matter what the size and when/if there comes a point that the x30h is playing too many kbps or mbps that it becomes choppy or degraded. Thank you very much for all your help.

1) Yes, that quality would be too much. Most current 3-400 mhz ARM processors can handle fullscreen at 10-20fps. But with resizing lets say a 1mbps stream (may be DVD quality lets say) it's too much for the processor.

2) Can you really **sustain** 1mbps transfer to your device without dropouts, re-broadcasts and so on?

I'd like to see some testing lets say copy a 30 meg file over the air and see how long it takes. I'd be very surprised if you can do it in the time it would take to play that many megs of your video stream. If you can't then forget it, your network connection can't keep up

3) Lets say you pick a 500k stream and you can play it, we're displaying on a 320x240 LCD with a relatively limited display response time, as well as fairly crappy stero audio (mine is quite hissy). I'm not sure even then you could tell the difference between 192k and 500k video with audio. The dells seem to have a particularly crappy sound system, I'd questrion whether it can manage much above 22khz, let alone 44.1khz CD quality (or LOL 5.1 surround !)

So, 2 major problem areas to consider as well as a question mark over whether you could tell the difference. Personally I don't remember seeing WMP having specs for 1mbps video anyway, so you may want to restrict things to a more realistic 192-256kbps and see what you can get out of it.
