How to Stream Video and Audio from PC to X3 over Wi-Fi?

Does anyone know how to stream content from their PC to other devices conencted to a wi-fi network?

Reason I ask is I would like ot stream video and audio files from my dektop PC to my Dell Axim X3i.

I currently have my PC connected to a MS MN-500 802.11b router which obviously is what the X3i connects to. Is there a way to do this with Windows Media Encoder 9?

I'm using XP Pro on my desktop if it matters.

Thanks

Ok, I followedthis giude:
http://www.bigdsvideo.com/bigdsvideo...ides/id11.html

I setup my Windows Media Encoder settings to what's shown in the guide but when I enter the url I get into WMP on the X3 it doesn't work. Any ideas on how WMP should be setup on the X3?

Thanks

Ok, I'm really hoping some one could help me out here. I did get it to work for a while. Then when I tried to stream stuff again it won't work. I don't know what gives? I can surf the net on the X3.

And I can watch my streaming video on my PC if I enter the url into WMP so I don't know why I can on my X3? I'm using the same settings in Windows Media Encoder when it was working so I think it's something on the X3. I think Windows Media Player won't connect, or it doesn't see it's connected to the net.

Can some one please tell my what the UDP Port should be for WMP on the X3, it's under Tool/Setting/Network

When I try to load the url I get;

"Windows Media Encoder it says Windows Media cannot find the file.

Verify that your network proxy settings are correct, and then try again."

I'm really stuck with this one. Should I not have WEP turned on or something?

Ok, I know I'm having a chat with my slef here but maybe my info may hel pother with doing this.

I did end up solving the problem and this is how.

When I was getting the Internet address from Windows Media Encoder, it was giving me my Computer's name as the address with :8080 at the end. Now my computer name isn't even the stupid name I gave it, it's like some random number. So what I did was try the my PC's IP address and added :8080 at the end and it's working.

If someone can explain to me what's going on here I'd appreciate it.

coo because i wanna do this too. When i try using windows media encoder to broadcast say my webcam i can never get it to work. I would always goto the address i set it for no matter what port i have it set for and it won't work. Will i have this same problem here? It must have something to do with the firewall.

Sorry , I just now seen your post for I do most of my hanging out in the multimedia forum section. But like you said, you did the right thing by trying the other address for WME9 gives you a Internet and Lan address. Im not sure why your X3 did'nt see the other address right...It works fine on both addresses on my Axim 5. But anyway glad you got it working....:)

HighTymes, there should'nt be a firewall issue for Im behind one and I never had to change a thing, but like I said above I have the Axim 5 and there may be something different in X3...If you think its an firewall thing I would suggest going into the wireless forum and look up IkeHiker, He has made up a great guide on how to set up your Lan plus lots more info on wireless...Good luck

I don't think having a firewall would be a problem. I have 3 firewalls running. One from my router, one from PC-Cillin, and Windows basic firewall.

If you set Windows Media Encoder to use port 8080, that's the same port used to access the net so if you can get online it should work.

To save yourself some trouble if the IP or LAN address that Windows Media Encoder doesn't work then just get your pc's IP address and just use that.

So it would be "http://1.2.3.4:8080/". Just be sure you're using port 8080.

You can try using mms instead of http to stream.

I use it at home and it works great. I forget what settings you need to set on the "Output" tab since I don't have WME available right now. I use port 1090 as my streaming port. Connecting to it you need to do "Open URL" in WMP and type in this "mms://<ip address or hostname>:1090"

Good luck.

Sorry I am a bit slow, and quite new at all this.

Break it down easy for me:)

The files are located on my computer under //scott/mp3/video so if I want to stream off my computer to the x3....... i would do what exactly.

Folow this guide: http://www.bigdsvideo.com/bigdsvideo...ides/id11.html

The only difference is that for your source you would click file, not screen capture.

There are a couple of ways to "stream" your mpegs.

The first is to push them (i.e. like TV or radio) and then connect to the "pushed" stream. Big D's guide explains how to do this very well.

The second is to pull them (i.e. more like the Internet, on demand) and just open the remote file on your Axim. If you are able to connect to your network drive, you should be able to just open the videos in WMP or MVP or whatever you use to watch them. There are a couple of threads around here that explain how to connect to network drives.

I've been doing significantly testing using live audio/video off of a DirecTV receiver encoded into a PC using the Windows Media Encoder software and it works great. I've tested streaming live as well as streaming stored videos.

I thought I posted that I got it to work. I have no problems streaming video and music off of my PC and viewing them on my X3.

I would still like ot figure out how to be able to skip to the next video or song in my source list though from the X3, does anyone know how to do that?

I'm also trying to figure out how to stream DVDs from my PC to the X3, I started another thread about this.
