x3i hangs on dell startup screen
Hi
I've had my x3i ( my first ppc ) for acouple of weeks and until now had no problems.
This morning it crashed and popped up a load of dll error messages.
( didn't note what they were... doh! )
Now it won't start at all.
I tried a soft reset and a hard reset but nothing works.
I even let the backup battery run down.
It just shows the screen with the Dell logo then hangs and does nothing.
What else can I try...?
Do I have to re-install the OS..?
Is this possible?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Wow Hard Reset doesn't work? Did you call up Dell yet? I have a CD called "Dell Axim PPC2003 Upgrade" somewhere, not sure if that would help or anything.

A hard reset should re-install the OS and make it like it was when it came out of the box. You may need to go ahead and call Dell "support" and get a replacement.

Similar problem here. I had my x3i for about a week and it had crashed a few times, but one time a soft reset didn't work. So after a while i thought i'd best do a hard reset, which seemingly worked but i still had all my files and programs?? Also it changed the time and date, and within about two minutes they changed back?? I did not sync it and performed no connectivity.
Since then i have uninstalled everything and only installed the essentials. Is working fine now.

I wouldn't be too worried about it - there are plenty of us users who've had no such problems - it's just people don't usually put up posts saying "My X3 hasn't crashed at all"... I'm sure there are far, far more users who are having no problems compared to those having problems... same with any such thing, you only hear about the people who are having problems.

Thanks all.
It seems strange to me that a hard reset doesn't cure this problem.
I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem, so if a hard reset does indeed wipe everything and set the system back to it's original, fresh out of the box, state it should cure it.
I guess I'll just have to call Dell on Monday and see about getting a replacement.

BTW, Sorta kinda related:
I had my Axim "crash" on me twice, with the following symptoms.
- The system would lock up.
- I'd hit the power button.
- Axim would turn off, and wouldn't turn back on even by hitting the power button or hitting the soft reset.
The unit just became completely unresponsive, the first time around, I did a complete hard reset. And then it happened to me again, I went through the proceedure of holding the Power and Soft Reset button in order to do a hard reset, and when prompted, i declined or cancelled the hard reset, and the unit would power up again, no problems.
I've narrowed it down to using pocketWiNc 1.3 buld 952 as the cause. Guess there's some kinda bug with it.

Status Update:
I called Dell this morning - of course they had nothing useful to say about the problem.
They just put me on hold for 5 minutes and then said they'd send me a replacement.
Would be good to know what caused it in case it happens again.
Never mind.
Hmmm....Maybe they'll send me a Bluetooth one...! ; )

No idea...
but I would guess that if you buy it on ebay it is technically second-hand, which might invalidate any guarantees....
Probably depends on the company and even on thecountiy's laws on consumer rights etc...

As long as it is in the warrenty time period, you can call dell and get them to "change owners." Just give them the express code or the service tag.
