what is ARM, MIPS, and SH3

In looking for different software for my X3, I keep seeing different download selections labeled as ARM, MIPS, or SH3. What are these, and what do they mean? Please help.

In the early days of Pocket PCs there were different processors for different manufactuers.

ARM was Compaq iPAQ
SH3 was HP Jornada
MIPS was Casio Cassiopeia

Of course we all know the iPaq dominated the market and most software was written for it. So when Microsoft decided to make one version of the OS they went with the largest market.

In case James wasn't black and white, you should download the one for ARM. It's the one that will work on your X3, or any PPC2002 or higher device.

Actually,

The decision wasn't Microsofts. I actually have many builds of CE.Net 4.2 on my machine that are for different platforms. It all depends on the hardware you are using, and the BSP you install into Platform Builder.

The Kicker is this: Intel currently gives away 64Megabytes of Strata Flash for every XScale sold. So you see why they are dominating the market currently. Buy a non Intel Processor, and buy memory, or Buy an XScale and get 64Meg of Strata for free.... No Brainer for the hardware guys.

Cheers, Glad I found the site.

Actually, the decision was Microsoft's. When MSFT began designing Pocket PC 2002, they decided to standardize on the ARM processor. This is why you will not see any applications targeting the MIPS or SH3 processors for Pocket PC 2002 or WM2003 devices. Keep in mind, cageyjames was referring to Pocket PCs and not other embedded WinCE devices.
