Playing MP3 Files Across Wfi in Windows Media Player?
I am able to attach to a netowork drive on my X3i and see MP3 files, but I do not see how to get them to play in Windows Media Player. Is this possible?

You want to stream them? you can do that with Windows Media Encoder. Have a look in the Multimedia forum and you'll find the answer.

WME runs on your PC, takes you audio and converts it to an TCP/IP stream. You can then use WMP on the PPC to connect to that stream and listen.

I use Resco Explorer 2003 to map network drives, I just browse to the share on my workstation, and click the file -- plays just fine.

Ok cool! I happen to have Resco Explorer also, and was able to get this working, no problem. Ao I tried adding files to a playlist and I get snagged here. I can enter the play list app, and it shows the song playing, but it will not let me add the song to a play list, all the tools are grayed out.

Is their some trick to doing this. I wonder if one of the third party MP3 players will work better for this purpose?

When you're in the playlist section... goto edit playlists, create a new play list and then u should have a long wait and boom, all your files should pop up.

ALSO YOU MUST MUST MUST...

Have your network folder as a "ROOT" of your device and not it's own instance in resco explorer...

Well I tried to figure this one out, but no luck. Resco shows all of my shares underneath the network folder which is a part of the root directory, but is not the root directory.

I even tried making a shortcut to the directory of the MP3 in the root, but I wasn't able to paste the shortcut.

If I didn't know better I would think MS tried to cripple such operations, I mean the fact that the playlist editor cannot see network shares seems overly limiting on a machine that is wireless and touts network access.

I keep wondering if a 3rd party MP3 player may not have these limitations....

I don't use WMP to play my MP3's via wifi. I use GSPlayer. GSPlayer offers a whole lot more functionality than WMP IMO and it is free. When using Resco File Explorer to map your shared folder to a folder on your PPC, using GSPlayer to create a playlist using your shares is a snap. GSPlayer also supports shoutcast which is a plus.

You can find GSPlayer at www.freewareppc.com.

I downloaded and installed GSPlayer, it works great... except that it cannot see my network share. The only program that can see my network share is Resco file explorer 2003.

So I am trying to figure this out, that is mapping the network share into the pocket PC directory space so that GSPlayer can see the files.

Just seeing the network share is not enough. You have to map the share to a visible folder on your PPC. Then GSPlayer or any other MP3 player will use the local folder name to view your MP3 files across your network share.

I don't use Resco. I use Netrunner. It is a free app. When installed I just click connect and it asks me the remote path to map and the Local folder name. Then you can use the local folder name to view your files across your share.

Thanks again Ted! I will check into Netrunner.

I also found out that Resco has an option that maps your network shares into the root of the device. I set this, reset the device and wella, now it works!

So I think there are 3 ways to play files across WiFi:

1.Stream them and listen via Windows Media Player
2.Map the MP3 network drive with Netrunner, and select files from the share
3.Map the Mp3 network drive using Resco File explorer, and select files from the share

I hope this information is useful to others crossing this path, and I appreciate all who helped me with this!
